Biography

Suriel
Second in Command of the Healers
tumblr_inline_o23j63EDNh1r3lvtf_500.png
A healer's duties are never ending. There is no such thing as a break- if we are not treating the injured or attending to the sick then we are restocking our supplies and brewing fresh potions for future use.

Being a healer is a lot harder than the rest of the clan seems to think. The warriors and rangers might face death while carrying out their duties, but it is the healers who must then fight off death and that is far harder than fighting off any beast clan. Though it pains him, Suriel will accept that he can not win every battle he undertakes. He cannot save everyone. He fears that Raphael has not learned that lesson. Even now the chief healer tries to heal the scars tearing apart the clan, but sometimes there are wounds that just can't be healed. Nonetheless, Suriel will support Raphael because even if he silently worries for his leader's sanity he cannot help but admire Raphael's compassion and determination to save every patient. Maybe Suriel is the one in the wrong. Maybe there is no such thing as 'incurable' or 'past the point of no return'.

Biography

Though Suriel was born on the frigid expanse of the Southern Icefield, his parents were of a nomadic nature and as such he didn't grow up as part of any clan. As a result his upbringing likely would be considered difficult by most, though not by Suriel himself. While it was true that he didn't grew up in the sheltered protection of an established clan, he preferred the practical lessons he learned wandering the icefields. They shaped him into who he is today. When his parents split and departed for other domains, Suriel chose to remain in the ice domain for a time. He apprenticed under various healers and learned much from each of them, as well as refined his elemental control.
Eventually though, it started to feel as though there was no where else to go. He'd interned with most of the healers who took in unaffiliated dragons and had no interest in settling into a clan. So Suriel packed up what little he owned and headed in his father's footsteps to the Sunbeam Ruins. There he once again began interning with what healers would allow him, before hearing of an extremely talented healer in a relatively new clan. He decided to travel there and see for himself. Perhaps even intern under said healer if the clan wouldn't require his allegiance or else offer some services in exchange for some goods. His own supplies were starting to run low.
Raphael was not what he'd expected. For one, he was younger than Suriel had assumed based on the rumors. It took years of dedication to be even mildly proficient in healing after all. At first he thought that the rumors had overstated Raphael's abilities but then he saw him at work. If anything, the rumors he'd heard had understated them. He was fascinated.
Raphael was hesitant about taking on an unaffiliated dragon, especially one with more formal training in healing, as an intern. He did agree to let Suriel join him as a consultant though. The first couple of days were awkward as they felt each other out but they soon fell into an easy harmony. So easy in fact, that Suriel realized one day that he'd spent several months with the clan without once feeling the urge to depart. In fact, he couldn't picture leaving the clan at all. That was the day he officially joined the clan's ranks, to Raphael's immense joy.
Though he never before understood the bonds that held clans together, Suriel started to grasp some of it as he grew to know his fellow clanmates. What he didn't understand was the growing political tensions. Things had been fine as they were. All this new mess was doing was stressing out Raphael. Seeking to ease Raphael's stress levels and knowing that a growing clan would be harder and harder for the two of them to properly attend to, Suriel agreed to present Azaleia's request to apprentice with the healers to Raphael after the young guardian approached him. It took some time, but Raphael did eventually allow Azaleia to join their ranks. In time, Suriel hopes that she'll be able to take on more duties and lessen the weight on Raphael's shoulders some.

Personality

Unlike most spirals, Suriel is extremely calm and laidback. No one in the clan has ever seen him panic or even wind himself into knots. Suriel is very focused on his assigned duties and favors quiet hobbies, like reading medical texts in what little down time he has. He worries greatly for Raphael and will take on additional tasks in order to spare his more anxious friend the stress. Though like Raphael he hates to lose a patient, Suriel is more accepting of losses and willing to triage appropriately, based on who he feels he can save. Coming from a nomadic background, he's not used to forming close attachments with the dragons around him. While spending a prolonged period of time with the Watchers' Clan has led to him growing closer with his fellow clanmates, he'd still spends most of his time in the healing wings and therefore subsequently only really interacts with Raphael and Azaleia. He does on occasion seek out Raphael's friends in order to convince them to intercede when the other spiral is getting worked up and stressed out.

Skills and Abilities

Though he doesn't have Raphael's raw talent, Suriel is an extremely proficient healer. When he joined the clan, his knowledge of the art was even greater than Raphael's, though the chief healer has since caught up. Whereas Raphael is a capable fighter, albeit one focused on defending and healing the rest of his squad, Suriel is less at ease in battle. He can hold his own, but he struggles with the rigors of fighting while healing and lacks Raphael's almost miraculous constitution. Give him a healer's tent any day- he'd rather heal any combatants in a secured, sterile environment than the middle of a battle. As a dragon born of the ice flight, he is extremely skilled with his elemental control. That and his serene personality have led to some of the clan (primarily the rangers) nicknaming him "Ice King".

Relationships

Raphael
18595177.png
Up until recently, Suriel and Raphael were the clan's only healers and so they've developed a close professional and personal relationship over the years. Suriel views Raphael as a talented, capable healer, one who will only improve with age and practice. When Suriel first joined the clan, he deferred to Raphael and treated him with a smidge of hero worship. Though there can be some distance at times due to their role of leader and subordinate, Suriel by now readily admits that he sees Raphael as a friend. Suriel is one of the few dragons in the clan to recognize the toll recent events are taking on Raphael (as well as the toll the Battle of the Terrace had taken on him, even though Suriel only met him after that). He knows Raphael will sacrifice everything for the sake of others, seeing that as the duty of a healer, and so Suriel has taken it upon himself to protect his friend and his friend's interests. In light of the other spiral's increasing anxiety, Suriel has taken to silently shifting more and more responsibilities onto his own shoulders in an effort to assist his friend and leader.
Azaleia
34978640.png
As the clan has grown in size, the duties of healer are no longer so easily shared between Raphael and Suriel, no matter their skill. Therefore, when Azaleia approached Suriel to express an interest in learning the art, Suriel agreed to intercede with Raphael on her behalf. They need more hands and Azaleia was eager and willing. Worse came to worst, they'd go back to how things were before. Though Suriel doesn't consider himself to be as good at teaching as Raphael, he has taken Azaleia under his wing since she began apprenticing with them. After all, he was the one to convince Raphael to accept her so she's now his responsibility.
