Chivalry!

Lapis lives by chivalry. He has sworn an oath to be the most loyal knight a king could wish for, and he has not broken that oath yet. Quick on his feet (though a bit lacking in brains), Lapis will run to and fro, whether he be required to stand guard, battle enemies, or simply run errands no one else feels like doing.

He has learned and understands that this is the first step to becoming a new knight, and he had grown to love his new clan more than his old one.

He gets tricked into doing other dragons' responsibilities more often than someone should, but he does he ever complain? No! A knight never complains, not even if he's stuck with mucking out familiar dung for the fifth time that week.

Not only is he loyal, Lapis is brave (to the point of being foolishly so) and will not hesitate to risk his life for the silliest things...such as throwing himself in front of a speeding cart to stop it from crushing a passing bird.

Lapis does have notable sword-fighting skills and very limited magic (such as creating small, sparkling pink distractions and miniature explosions).

Ironically, the one thing that sets Lapis off is stupidity from other dragons.

Early Years

Lapis’s feet were sore and blistered.

How many days and nights he had been running, he’d lost track of, and there seemed to be no end to the pink peaks that curved, claw-like, towards the Observatory.

He just wanted to be gone, out of this horrible place with its strange, cloaked dragons and their enigmatic magics.

“He’d make the perfect little messenger-boy,” the crone rasped, her patchy flesh shadowed by the traditional hood she wore. “He’s got good legs on him, and he’s a quick runner…what better job for a young drake who hasn’t any brains in his head?”

Lapis had been found at the monastery’s doorstep (a twisted place, unlike those found in the Lightweaver’s domain) as a hatchling and was originally going to be raised in the dragons’ magic and religion, but was soon found to be too “simple” for the cult.

“Stupid,” the Wildclaw panted, the beat of his footsteps pounding into his ears. “Stupid, stupid, stupid… I never should have left….”

He had no place to go, nowhere to stay…. Finally, the end of the peaks, a place Lapis had never seen. There was a cliff up ahead, and beyond that, a strange, flat surface of blue. Lapis leapt off the cliff, stretching his legs out to land on that queer ground…when he realized it was not, in fact, blue dirt, but water.

The Wildclaw frantically beat his wings, squeaking in alarm as his tail dipped into the cold waves. Fly! Fly! He had only done so a few times, and never over something he couldn’t stand on! Eventually he settled into it, but the wind was quick and the air was frigid. He flew for who-knows-how-long (he lost count after three hours) until he spotted sight of a landmass—or, rather, several landmasses, broken into bits and seemingly floating upon the water’s surface.

Lapis landed on the nearest landmass, sinking up to his knees in something that was powdery, white, and—good gracious it was cold! He squawked, flapping around like some chicken, his wings tired but sweet Arcanist was the stuff cold! Eventually he became a bit used to it, but he hated the way it shifted around him, freezing his most sensitive areas.

“This place is absurd!” he cried out, looking around. Snow! Snow and ice and freezing water as far as the eye could see! He couldn’t even see the very edges of the Starfall Isles. Lapis huffed and stepped forward, shivering, his claws slipping and sliding in the snow, which had a layer of ice beneath it. “Such a nasty place. How am I ever supposed to find a home here?”

“Seeing as this isn’t your territory,” a soft, non-hostile voice spoke from behind him, “you aren’t.”

Lapis gasped and spun around, his feathery frill raising in surprise. There was another Wildclaw, decked out in armor, taller than Lapis.

“I-I-I—” The blue Wildclaw sputtered, trying to think of an excuse. “I didn’t mean to come here, that is, I did mean to come here, but, you see, it was to get away from my old home, which is in the Starfall Isles, and I really didn’t like it there, so I came here—”

“Slow down,” the armored drake said calmly, a hint of amusement (and yet, caution) sparkling in his eyes. “What are your intentions?”

Lapis took a deep breath, attempting to calm himself. “I want a new home,” he began. “Somewhere I can…I don’t know, serve someone. …Be a soldier, maybe, or a knight.”

The Wildclaw raised a brow. “A knight? …You say you are from the Starfall Isles, and yet you want to be a knight.” He chuckled. “What is your name?”

“Lapis,” the Wildclaw replied, swallowing. The fact that his interrogator appeared to be in good spirits amused him…he’d heard tell of the Ice flight dragons’ brutality and mercilessness towards intruders. “I didn’t know this territory was owned by anyone,” he added.

The Wildclaw became serious again. “All territory is owned by someone. You are standing on the Icewarden’s property. …We simply borrow it, use it to make our homes. And in return we send dragons to him, to become a part of his army. But intruders do not get to be one of his soldiers….”

“What…what happens to them?” Lapis couldn’t help but asking. He definitely had some of the Arcane’s curiosity in him.

“They become prisoners; trophies, for the Icefather to study and view,” the Wildclaw replied. “You say you fled your own home? Why don’t you come with me. You may have some use.” He walked past Lapis, not looking back to see whether he followed. He walked steadily through the snow without stumbling once.

Lapis floundered after him. “Some use? You…you’re not going to make me some messenger-drake, are you?”

The Wildclaw stopped, glancing back for a half-second before continuing his walking. “Well, that’s up to you, really. Just make sure you have a purpose within our clan, or you’ll be forced to leave. You have to prove your worth to the King.” He moved on in silence.

Lapis’s eyes grew big. A king could only mean one thing—he’d have a shot at being a knight after all. He ran after the Wildclaw, finally finding his balance in the shifting snow.

Description

There isn't much to say about Lapis' looks; he's an average Wildclaw drake, almost always decked out in full armor with some sort of sword at his side. Occasionally a shimmer of Arcane light will shine in his eyes, but that is rare.

Familiar

Lapis' Raptorik Warrior, Gawain, is loyal and a bit too fierce. He is constantly by Lapis' side (or under his feet), shooting nasty looks at anyone who gets close. A brave warrior, Gawain rushes into battle with a bloodcurdling shriek, taking down foes much larger than him with his speed and excellent aim with the spear.

When he's not actively fighting, Gawain is training (so long as Lapis is nearby). While a bird of few words, the intelligent Raptorik has been heard uttering intelligible Draconic under his breath...the majority being cuss words.

Lapis' den is simple: A cold cavern with a few pieces of crudely-crafted wooden furniture. An Arcane Flight banner hangs proudly over the entrance of the doorway, with a smaller banner (quoting "Sir Lapis, Knight") nailed below it. There is a nest that is composed almost entirely of blue Raptorik feathers (although it used to be made up of cloth).
