Biography

   ▶ CROMAN
           The Crystal's Inheritance
   Charge: Contagion Crystal

Simply a small gleam in the wind.
Croman is famous for his finer detailing in his jewelry, and infamous for his dangerous charge, the crystal.

Croman is often seen as a shiny mistake, as his perfect sheen was not purposeful nor smart. Upon crystal-hunting with his familiar, Yuuta-- he came across what will now be his ever-poisoning charge. The crystal in which he discovered he placed in his cove to ensure safety and every second he was around it, he felt a unnerving feeling coming from the inside of his body-- and eventually he'd become a crystal-veined guardian just like the crystal's previous owners. The crystal's previous owners likely caught on to the horror before gaining similar veins, but Crow is different. He grew more attached to the crystal every second he was near, and thus will never be de-attached from the curse. Unsure what will be his future, he makes what he can out of the present and hopes that all around him-- especially his new clan-- will understand and give him the love and affection he so dearly requires.

For the longest time, it was only Croman and Yuuta. It wasn't always that way, but such things rarely are.

Croman was an exceptional youth. In many ways, he was the perfect student. He was clever from the day he hatched, always inquisitive and mild mannered , and a true favorite of his teachers and mentors. He was the most well-mannered of his generation, and he proved to be exceptionally responsible for his age. He was even entrusted with a pet long before his peers. Once he was deemed old enough (though still quite young), he was presented with a beautiful bird with radiant feathers. He named her Yuuta, and they became inseparable.

He developed a youthful interest in the earth and it's riches, not out of greed, but out of a sheer fascination for the beauty of refined metals and cut gemstones. There was something unspeakably beautiful about them; they had a vividness of color that nothing else seemed to be able to replicate, not even the finest art. The only thing that could compare were Yuuta's lustrous feathers. It was a good comparison, he thought. Both were almost too beautiful to be real, completely in a league of their own.

As an adolescent, Croman aspired to become a gem cutter. It was the only calling which seemed to fit. He began to go on solitary expeditions, venturing into caves and sifting through streams and gullies in search of gems to work with. Yuuta always accompanied him, and in time, he even trained her to help him spot veins where interesting minerals might be found. He learned to carve, he learned to make his own settings, and he learned to polish his finished pieces to a perfect shine.

He took immense pride in this work. He loved to create beauty, and he loved to see the joyful looks on others' faces when he presented them with a finished product. He excelled quickly and soon became quite wealthy, but the wealth didn't change him. His humble personality remained intact, and his professionalism was never called into question. Ever hard-working and personable, Croman became a fixture in the clan. He could be counted on. Everyone knew him as gentle and kind, though they sometimes whispered about how sensitive and sentimental he could be. He had a self-conscious streak, plainly visible in how he undervalued his own work and how he feared criticism and rejection. He managed these problems gracefully, and for that, he was respected. He was not the most social or even the most visible figure in the clan, but he was always there, and always the same.

He wasn't the type that anyone would suspect of anything unseemly. Unfortunately for Croman, sometimes things don't go as expected.

One day, while foraging for materials for his jewelry business, he stumbled upon a bizarre, pulsating crystal. Having never seen such a thing, he was quickly drawn to it's beauty. He examined it from a safe distance at first, transfixed by it's dazzling blue glow. He had no idea what magic might cause such a beautiful effect, but he'd never known a mere crystal to be dangerous, so he reached out to take it.

When he touched it, he felt a burst of power. It didn't exactly hurt, but it left his body feeling tingly and displaced, as if something had been shaken at his core. Nothing seemed to be wrong, but something wasn't right, either. It was unsettling, but he chalked it up to nerves. The thrill of discovery must have gotten the better of him!

He carried it home, planning to add it to his own personal collection. Such a beautiful stone would serve as wonderful inspiration for future projects. It stayed locked in a chest among his other personal belongings, as he didn't want anyone else making offers to purchase the stone, but he also didn't want to seem vain or greedy by displaying it. He would take it out at night, examining it and studying it, trying to make sense of it's strange properties, or simply to admire it and let it inspire his artistic sensibilities.

He didn't hide the stone, though. It was no secret. He spoke about his curious discovery to those who were frequently interested in such things, and he showed it to whoever asked. It was a piece of trivia, a mealtime conversation topic, nothing more. But it wasn't a secret.

Within a few weeks of obtaining it, Croman noticed strange veins of shining blue light beginning to appear beneath his scales. They were a mild concern at first, but as the weeks wore on, they grew worse. They became brighter, and they gradually worked their way through his skin until they sat on the surface. That's when Croman realized that the strange patterns were not glowing blood, as he'd suspected, but were some sort of foreign material, which quickly set into the surface of his skin. It was as if he had veins of his own exotic blue crystal growing through his very body.

Alarmed, he went to the clan clerics for help, but they had no idea what was happening. Neither did the mages. The other dragons began to whisper, fearful that Croman had been cursed by some sort of nefarious magic. Maybe he shouldn't have touched that glowing rock.

Maybe what he had was contagious.

Their fears became paranoia, and their paranoia became hate. They did not directly drive Croman from their clan, but the shame he felt was enough. The way they whispered behind him, the way they avoided him when he left his lair, it was all too horrible for a sensitive soul to bear. Croman was forced to leave.

He took only Yuuta and the blue stone with him. He wandered, hoping that he could find someone who could identify what had happened to him. He hoped that he could find a cure, or maybe just something to reassure him that it would not one day take over his entire body.

It was a lonely time, filled with fear and misgiving, and lacking the beauty that Croman so loved. It still wasn't without moments of hope. Eventually, the crystal stopped spreading. Croman also began to adapt to the changes in his body. He started to feel more comfortable and was able to get around better, which was a boon for a dragon who lived without a clan.

After a lengthy period of wandering, Croman eventually came to his current clan. He approached them as he had many others, merely asking to trade and hoping that a mage or other educated dragon among them might have an answer for his ailment. The clan agreed to allow him to stay while he was given a thorough examination, and during that short but enjoyable stay, Croman and the clan found that they liked each others' company. This clan was not afraid of him, and when they extended their kindness, Croman realized just how lonely he had become.

A mage determined that Croman had been afflicted with an unknown condition that was similar to gembond. It didn't seem to be contagious, but they had no idea how to cure it. That was a good enough answer for Croman, not to mention the other dragons in the clan. When they offered for him to stay, he quickly accepted. He now lives as the clan's resident jeweler. He enjoys a similar reputation to the one he had in his own clan, only now, he is also known for his stunningly beautiful hide.

One thing is certain: Croman may never be separated from beauty. He is forever marked by the very same vibrant, shining blue that he admired since his youth. While his passion for gemstones has found a way to consume him in a frighteningly literal sense, it has also become one with him in a way that he now finds pleasing.

His passion for his craft is what defines his quality of life. It's just as well that he can't go anywhere without it. No longer ashamed, Croman has become comfortable with his affliction. He's no longer interested in finding a cure, but he still keeps the original crystal locked away, hopefully where nobody else will ever find it.
