Biography

Young but wise.
Gentle but strong.
Dreamer but realist.
King.

There is a difference between fantasy and reality, that line, however, does not often lie where one might think. Baxil was still young when he first realized this.

A dragon of fine, but neither royal nor divine lineage, Baxil was never fated to be a King. Instead, it was a far more difficult route that lay ahead. As the lorekeepers would later write of him, it was three great acts of contradiction that would lead him to become one of the most respected Kings of dragonkind.

The first, was an act of great wisdom beyond his years. Baxil was always a listener, learning from others mistakes, hearing out concerns and problems, and seeking all sides to an argument before he passed judgement. People often found themselves confiding in him, and so Baxil continued to learn more and more about the world around him. Then one day, Baxil listened just hard enough to hear the future. A prophecy, people called it, but if asked he equates it to much humbler origins; the stories of many combined, tensions that spoke to trouble brewing. It foretold great calamity in the years to come. Baxil was wise to hear it, yet wiser still to begin to prepare for its coming.

And so Baxil grew strong. Strength came naturally to him, yet he was never one to put on a show or pick a fight. Instead he was there when work needed to be done, lifting heavy materials for construction or clearing debris from a violent storm. When there was trouble around, it took little more than his strong presence as a firm reminder that it would be best for everyone if it went no further. In time there was no question - Baxil was perhaps the strongest of them all, but how he used his strength was not as the others did.

Then, one day, there was civil war. At last the calamity Baxil had heard foretold had come to pass. The dragons of the clan split, leading a hard and bitter fight that lasted for days, each side pushing ever onward and, their strengths matched, they fought back and forth over the land, blood dying the soil a deep red. Each side begged Baxil for his help, yet he lent his strength to neither. Then, on the fifth day, as the sun rose, Baxil stepped between them. For a moment they hesitated, then they attacked. As it was told, Baxil dispensed of both with exacting ease, (though if asked he himself will tell a different story, of tired troops and careful preparation), doing no great injury, merely rendering them too tired to fight. When they pressed forward it was a simple swoop of a wing or swipe of a claw to push them back until at last there was no choice for both sides but to forfeit the fight. Baxil carried the wounded from the battlefield. This was Baxil’s second feat.

When the fighting at last died down, Baxil found himself aspiring to a greater purpose for dragonkind. The war had claimed the lives of many, and to little end. It was clear to see, and hear from the grumbling of the others, that it was only a matter of time until the clan leader’s strength was tried again. So it was, as Baxil helped carry the wounded and lift the rubble left behind that he began to dream once more. What if there was a place where diplomacy and reason ruled, where there was fairness instead of greed, negotiation rather than violence, acceptance of the new instead of pushing away the unfamiliar? These, he knew, were dreams. And yet, Baxil found himself in a wholly unique place to bring them into reality. Through listening, he had gained great wisdom and a deep understanding of the desires and motivations of people, well-intended or not. Through the war he had seen both the savage and unprecedentedly kind and gentle sides of nature, and lived them both. Now he saw the importance of the dream - it was a goal. A far off one indeed, but Baxil was tenacious, and so he began to to seek those that would take that journey with him.

The forging of this new clan was Baxil’s third feat. He left the clan where he was raised and set out into the wide world. In his travels he learned things beyond his wildest imagination, but never once did it daunt him, and soon it became those differences that he sought. He met scholars and soldiers. Magicians and scientists. Beings the likes one could scarcely put to words, and some even say, a god. And too them all Baxil gave the same promise: to listen, to protect, and to work toward a bright future.
