"DIONYSOS (or Dionysus) was the great Olympian god of wine, vegetation, pleasure and festivity. He was depicted as either an older bearded god or a pretty effeminate, long-haired youth. His attributes included the thyrsos (a pine-cone tipped staff), drinking cup, leopard and fruiting vine. He was usually accompanied by a troop of Satyrs and Mainades (female devotees or nymphs)." Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Semele (some sources say he was Zeus's son alone, born from Zeus's thigh), with Semele being a mortal woman who was quickly struck down by Hera out of jealousy. In one story, Dionysus goes to the Underworld to recover the soul of his dead mother and brings her up to Olympus to become a goddess. In other counts, the trip to the Underworld is to rescue his wife. Dionysus is married to Ariadne, although there are many different versions on how they met. What seems to be the most common version of the tale is that he found her sleeping on the island of Naxos after Theseus had abandoned her there. She had helped Theseus slay the Minotaur, but after the deed was done and they departed he left her alone on the remote island. However, after she married Dionysus, Ariadne became an immortal goddess. |
