"APOLLON (or Apollo) was the great Olympian god of prophecy and oracles, healing, plague and disease, music, song and poetry, archery, and the protection of the young. He was depicted as a handsome, beardless youth with long hair and various attributes including:--a wreath and branch of laurel; bow and quiver; raven; and lyre."

Son of Leto and Zeus, Apollo and his twin sister Artemis were archers who represented the sun and the moon, with Apollo as the sun. Apollo took up the job of driving the sun chariot across the sky every day after Helios's reign as chariot-driver had ended. He also led the Muses, a group of goddesses representing different forms of the arts, and was also the patron god of the Oracle of Delphi, a mortal woman who volunteered her life to speaking the prophecies written by Apollo onto any mortal who came to her. For the Oracle of Delphi, this was a gift, but Apollo's 'gift' of prophecy could also be a curse, as was the case for Cassandra, who was cursed into telling the future but with the condition that no one would ever believe her.

Many famous myths of Apollo are those of his tragic loves. In one tale, he fell in love with the nymph Daphne, but she ran away. As he pursued her, she called out to help from Gaia, who turned her into a laurel tree where she stood so Apollo would not chase her.

Another is the story of Hyacinthus, the story of a young Spartan prince who was loved by both Apollo and Zephyrus, the god of the West Wind. The two gods fought for his love, but in a match of discus meant to impress him, the disk flew astray and killed Hyacinthus. As he lay dying, Apollo turned his beloved into a larkspur flower.

In yet another tale, Apollo falls in love with a Thessalian princess named Coronis, and they were expecting a child together. Yet, while she was pregnant, Coronis cheated on Apollo for a man named Iskhys, which was witnessed by Apollo's raven familiar. The raven told Apollo, and Apollo was thrown into a rage. He ordered his sister Artemis to strike Coronis down, and Artemis did so as well as slay many others around her brother's ex-lover. Suddenly, Apollo felt bad about what had happened, and blamed his raven for tattling, scolding it and turning its feathers jet black instead of white as they had been. At Coronis's funeral pyre, Apollo recovered a child from the ashes: their son, Asclepius, who would later become another God of Medicine. Apollo gave the baby away to be cared for by the centaur, Chiron.
