Some people fear death. Nettle embraces it. In fact, it’s how she makes her livelihood. As a child, she spent most of her free time with her beak buried in a book. Instead of talking to other hatchlings her own age, she read fantasy, fiction, and scientific works alike – anything she could get her claws on. One book in particular caught her attention: The Tome of Life and Death by Quinn of the Starwood Strand. It was thick, nearly bigger than she was, and fully illustrated with beautiful watercolor paintings. The tome taught her many things about the different dragon breeds, and their rituals –including their funerals and mourning habits. It took her weeks, but eventually she made it through the entire tome. When was finished, she knew what she wanted to do when she was grown. She wanted to study the different funeral rites of the different dragon and beast breeds and write a book of her own. The Tome of Life and Death was too vague, and left too many questions unanswered for her taste. She wanted to finish the work that Quinn had started. Once she was old enough, Nettle began an apprenticeship with her clan’s mortician. Although it wasn’t quite what she had dreamed of, the work fascinated her. She eagerly learned the trade of preparing bodies for burial and cremation. When her mentor passed away, she took his place as the head mortician. She hasn’t written her own book like she wanted, but she does enjoy serving as her clan’s keeper of the dead. Perhaps someday she’ll break out the ink and quill and fulfill her childhood dream. At least she isn’t lonely. While some dragons might find Nettle cold or abrasive, her mate Valerian adores her. As a potion master, Valerian can brew elixirs that heal or harm in equal measure – connecting him to death in a way that intrigues Nettle. They suit each other well. Nettle might seem like a somber dragon, but she does have her quirks. Like most skydancers, she enjoys collecting trinkets. She keeps a box full of the little things that other people have overlooked: a lost button, an inky quill, a broken strand of black pearls. Whatever things she finds beautiful or intriguing are stored safely inside. |
