In the wastelands of Plague, few things grow. Tendrils of decay stretch across the ground like vines, and strands of illness bloom and flower, releasing their sickening spores into the air. Poisons, viruses, death. Only the hardiest plants can thrive in the pits of contagion, which is just how those born in infection like it. Trees who’s sap burns and sizzles like acid, leaves whose touch will erupt boils on the hardiest scale. And red-capped mushrooms, white spots pristine among the rot. Those were Laili’s favorites.
As a hatchling her nest was crowded with fungi, the oozing spores and deathly stems a comfort to her. She studied the mushrooms as she grew older, learning when they would bloom, what manner of matter they preferred to grow in. Over time she wandered further and further afield, seeking out more varieties. She learned about the violent purple mushrooms that burrowed on the edge of the contagion, of the black spotted toadstools that dotted the rim of the Wyrmwound. Then the soft brown caps just over the boundary into the Shattered Plain caught her eye, or the luminescent green spores that drifted over the Reedcleft Ascent. Her knowledge grew, and so did her wanderlust.
In time she heard tell of a band of dragons from her homeland that had settled in the Tangled Wood, dragons who knew poisons, who were seeking knowledge from a place of healing. Perhaps there she could learn more, develop her skills and wisdom.
The Sanatorium provided a home to a wandering soul. The colonies of mushrooms that sprouted from the bones of her lair provided a purpose. And the dragons who lived there, those who came to heal or be healed, became a family.
