Wolfsbane
Pull the stone from the sword
Wolfsbane was a merc. Emphasis on was. She was good at it, too, and made far more money than any one person had a right to. Things couldn't possibly have been going any better. Then on a mission into the tangled wood, she got bit and contracted a particularly virulent form of gem sickness. Her condition worsened rapidly. Eventually the gems nearly soldered her limbs together, to the point where she could hardly hold a blade, much less swing one. To put it lightly, this put a bit of a dent in her ego. Her only source of income was gone, she lost all her customers, she could hardly move, and the nature of her profession was such that she didn't exactly have very many friends. Truth be told, she didn't even have an idea of what to do with herself if she couldn't work. It was near impossible not to let despair creep in. Then she heard through an old colleague that there was some little old lady out in wind territory working on a cure. Wolfsbane, desperate for a second chance, sold her possessions and hiked out all the way to the Windswept Plateau. After a bit of wandering she found the gulch, and she found the lady she was looking for: an eccentric little nocturne who wore goggles too big for her face. Her treatment was started, and soon enough gems started to flake off her skin in, slowly at first and then in great big chunks. It was nothing short of a miracle, at least as far as Wolfsbane was concerned. She wasn't, 100% cured (and probably won't ever be,) but at least she's alive and will be for a while. She could move comfortably again, and in the peace and quiet of the quaint little settlement she found herself in, she was able to construct a life worth living. Her new doctor friend was a big help, 'specially after the two began to see one another outside their scheduled checkups. Now Wolfsbane makes her living as a forager- venturing out into the fetid swamps that ring the boundary between the Plateau and the Wandering Contagion, collecting rare and dangerous herbs, and then selling them to the various practitioners of the gulch. It's busywork compared to her old job, but it keeps her happy and active. It's not nearly as lucrative for sure, but with a renewed sense of her own mortality Wolfsbane holds less and less stock in material things like that. |
