Biography

When Van joined Mu he immediately joined the Windborne as a member of the scouting legion. It was his duty top scout and protect the further reaches of the Caravan’s territory. He did this gladly and excellently. His duty caused him run ins with the native pirate crew in the Caravan; the Whistle Reeds. Like most dragons he didn’t think much of the Whistle Reeds, they were a part of the Caravan and helped facilitate their way of life. As long as they were welcome in the Caravan they would be welcome to Van as well.

Then he had a few run-ins with the Whistle Reeds. From that he learned of their healer, Mosrael, who was from their allied clan in the Sunbeam Ruins and decided he wanted to experience the wild life of piracy. Mos was a good dragon, probably the best dragon in the pirate crew. Too good for some lowly pirates. The fact that Mos was actually good cause Van to respect him over the others.

The Whistle Reeds interact heavily with the scouting legion of the Windborne as they often both work far afield. The scouting legion will also offer tips to the Whistle Reeds about good places to raid and pillage. Its all very much on the low though and the rest of the Caravan doesn’t know that the Whistle Reeds are used in such a way. But through this Van ended up seeing Mos more and more and they really hit it off.

Except Van is far too good himself to allow himself to have a real relationship with a lawless pirate like Mos. Van tried very hard for quite a while to try and change the view of the Whistle Reeds amid the scouting legion to allow him to arrest them, just for a little bit, long enough for him to convince Mos to give up his pirating ways. Didn’t work out and his commander grew very annoyed with him after a while.

Eventually Vanguard quit the Windborne and left the Caravan. He’s rather misguided that he believes he can convince Mos to stop being a pirate but he’s trying anyway. His latest attempt was to join the Cormorants and use them to attack and destroy the pirates, freeing his love of being part of the crew. Unfortunately, Sing isn’t too trusting of him yet and the fact that he was once a Windborne scout but will give up no Caravan secrets has not helped in this endeavor.

Because of Van’s one track mind he doesn’t see how this plan will ultimately not be successful but he’s trying it anyway. It's also led him to completely ignore a dragon who likes him and is very much available. Holly is the Cormorants healer and fancies Vanguard but Van doesn’t even know she exists, leaving her to pine over him at a distance.

Since the Caravan's move out of the Sea, and taking the Whistle Reeds with it Van no longer felt like the Cormorants were helpful in getting Mos to take him seriously. Staying with the Cormorants was a bit of a wake-up call but he's still more than a little misguided. He left the Cormorants and returned home. The Caravan was wary of him but he attested that he did not fight during the Cormorants Incursion, refusing to attack his clan, and was eventually allowed back into the clan. He rejoined the Windborne as a lowly patrol guard and now has too much to do with his time and no time to worry about Mos or chase him down.
