"I'm sorry," he said to her, raising his eyes to meet hers. He loved her eyes. They were as green as the first grass of spring, a stark contract to the firework colors around them. And to think, he had once been willing to let them go. If only his younger self had known how impossible that was.

"I was stupid," he continued, taking a careful step forward. "I was young and foolish, and I didn't understand what I was saying. And I get it now, that I'll never be able to be your one and only." He smiled, small and warm. "That's why I love you."

Evren's mouth fell open slightly. "I-- I'm going to spend the rest of my life here."

"It's a beautiful forest."

"There may not be very many travelers."

"But you'll be here."

She stared at him for a while. Her chest heaved. Soon, there was more than just rainwater flowing down her cheeks.

"Bierce," she whispered.

The rain continued to fall.
