Biography
Why is my dragon named?
Names hold a lot of value within the Dorsia clan, as they are recognized as receptacles of magic and are used to conceal the clan from outsiders. A True Name is believed to match one’s true nature, making it incredibly personal and potent. Many of the clan’s dragons will refuse to tell outsiders their actual names; those who interact with outsiders on a regular basis typically operate under an alias or will simply refrain from giving any name at all. To share one’s True Name with an outsider is the epitome of trust and is not to be taken lightly.
Naming ceremonies are held during a hatchling’s first weeks of life, in which their parents bestow them with a name that shares their same first letter. This is to demonstrate a familial bond between the parents and their children. During this time, their name is bound to the clan, which allows them to leave and enter the clan’s territory as they please. When the children reach adulthood, they are presented with the option of staying with the clan, serving the Shadowbinder, or venturing out on their own. Dragons who choose to leave the clan are permitted to choose new names that no longer match their parents’, though doing so erases their ability to find Dorsia on their own again once they leave. Choosing a different name while keeping the first letter, however, is acceptable.
