❧ the die is cast ....There is no shard of Seungah’s past that still pains her; the raw edges have been tumbled smooth over the years, and Seungah can turn them over as many times as she wants without reopening old wounds. She does still sometimes wish, however, that she didn’t bear the evidence so plainly on her face. Seungah keeps the crueler scars hidden behind a thick veil, though not so much for her own sake. Her friends have assured her of her own beauty enough times to believe it—scorched cheeks, glass eye, and all. As a mentor, Seungah likes to think that her veil eases some of the natural intimidation her bygone injuries evoke from her followers. What with her gang’s reputation, she finds she doesn’t need it. Even as the number of people who seek her out for her insight and experience mounts ever higher, Seungah remains reluctant to call herself a teacher. With no children of her own, it feels almost selfish to glorify what she’s grown to consider the bare bones of humanity. Ultimately, she is a gang leader—her domain is the gambling ring, not the classroom.
