Biography

Aether the Arcane Summoner

All arcane dragons feel the pull of magic and magical entities, and deep within Arcane territory there is a bloodline of Imperials that feel the pull of the Grand Arcane even greater than others. They embody Arcane magic unlike any other dragons, and are proficient in twisting normal magic to suit their needs and desires. The dragons from this clan are seen as twisted, malicious, and brutal in their magic. But really, they're just more devoted and committed.

Aether comes from this clan. His older brother, Reaver, was his primal motivation for leaving his old clan and seeking out The Radiant. His brand of magic was not unusual, not to the untrained eye, but the moment Reaver saw a demonstration of his talents white hot anger ran through his veins. Aether had the talent to do something no other dragon Reaver had ever met had, not even him despite his extensive efforts, and it enraged him. He kept him close, hoping to unravel his secrets, but Aether has no secret technique. At least nothing anyone can learn by watching.

For reasons undisclosed, Aether ultimately left his brother and The Radiant behind. Perhaps it was for greener pastures and new opportunities or perhaps something ultimately went south between him and Reaver. For a time he was a silent presence but he's since shown he was simply waiting, observing. The clan he found was changing beyond its old infrastructure, the leadership was slowly becoming restless, and their heir was suffering deeply from emotion wounds left by his dead twin. Instability was everywhere, and that gave Aether opportunity.

It started simple, bring back a dead twin, indebting himself to the next in line prince, Etienne. The favor he curried placed him right into the heart of the clan. From there it was training another prince's half-sister, Aylin as his apprentice. While he can't teach her his own personal brand of magic, he can still bring about the means to unlock her own potential. Aether is busy forging loyalties and debts where he can by strategically helping varying members of the clan. To what end? It is possible he doesn't know why himself, but he'll make himself as vital as possible while he figures it out.

Aether is a summoner, but not your average mage. Most mages summon from the Ethereal plane: Support minions, healers, monsters, wisps, and golems. Things that are easy to control and require no price to be paid. Aether however, summons from the nether. His summons are creatures made from the black magic most mages access to cast spells, and they are deadly and devious things. Sprites, Demons, Ghouls, and most importantly, lost souls. Though simply summoning these things is not overly unusual, perhaps the method in which he summons them is. He has no price, no focus, and he's able to piece together and create his own summon purely with magic. Aether can literally create a new soul and a new being from the Nether.

He doesn't hold his own magic in as high of a regard as Reaver does, but Reaver is obsessed with creation. His failed emperor rituals and the Sentinel bindings are his own way of attempting to replace souls and create new ones. Aether knows this, despite no one else in The Radiant ever being told. It puts the brothers at odds with each other, though Aether is content with pretending there are no hard feelings between them.

His particular skills make him very useful in both battle and scouting, and so he's been used as a combat mage many times. Though he mostly creates and uses summons in battle, his arcane magic is not unrefined, and he makes for a deadly opponent.
