Long ago, many years before you hatched, a great war broke out between the Fire and Ice Clans. The war raged on for hundreds of years, killing many on both sides. The dragons of the Southern Icefields had lost many of their kin from the battles that tore through the lands and one dragon, Jötunn, had seen enough of his brothers and sisters meet their end. He traveled deep in to the Cloudscape Crags, despite the warnings of his mother. For days he flew, until he came across a darkened cave. He flew inside, shaking his wings and body to rid himself of snow and ice that clung to his body. “Sixir? Are you here?”

Torches lit as he walked in further, the blue flames lighting the way through the winding halls. The young prince came to a large room with a bubbling caldron and a cloaked dragon standing over it. “Sixir! Good you're still here.” He said as he walked to her side. The Pearlcatcher looked up from the cauldron. “Jötunn? What can I do for you?” She said as her bright purple eyes scanned his form for any wounds or signs of frostbite. He was about to speak, but she held up a clawed hand to stop him. “You want me to perform a curse on the dragons of Ashfall Waste… Perhaps one to stop the fighting?”

The Tundra dragon nodded. “Please, too many of my kin have died for this pointless fighting.” She sighed and shook her head. “Only you would be so selfless.” She looked him in the eyes, vibrant purple meeting icy blue. “I’ll do it. I can curse the family to hatch dragon with powerful magic-“
“how would that help my people if they only gain more power?” She ignored him and continued. “-however they will have the icy looks of your kin, and their magic will be the chilling crystal that coats these mountains. It will not happen often, only once every few generations. This curse will cause them to focus more on their heirs than the war that they are fighting.”
Jötunn smiled softly at her. “Sixir… Thank you, for everything. How can I repay you for this?”
She made a thoughtful look, before holding onto her pearl tightly. “I wish to go with you, back to your home. I’m tired of hiding in the shadows because of my origin.” He nodded and sat. “How long until the curse starts?” She smiled. “It already has. Now all we can do is wait for the next hatchlings from the Ashfall Waste.”
The two returned to the prince’s home and waited for the curse to take hold. It did not take long for the clans of the Ashfall Waste to stop fighting, instead dealing with the first of many snowy white hatchlings with bright red eyes.

Four ash covered eggs laid in a nest of obsidian and molten lava. A male Guardian looked over the nest with a soft smile. ‘Our first nest… I wonder what they’ll be like.’ One of the eggs suddenly twitched. His head perked up and looked at the egg. It moved from the rest of them, who had yet to move, and out of the lava. “Whoa there little one, you need to stay warm.” He went to move it back, when a cracking noise filled his sensitive ears. The egg wobbled again and a large crack split the egg. He watched with wide eyes as a little white snout pushed its way from the egg. The little white Guardian dragon looked up at him with bright red eyes, the dead giveaway sign of an Ashfall Waste dragon. Time froze as he was pulled into a recent memory.
“Relax, my love, what could possibly be wrong with four perfectly healthy eggs?”
His mate gave him a worried look. “It’s the curse that’s been place upon us. My family has been notorious for hatching powerful fire magic users. But… we’ve been cursed to hatch a powerful ice user. They’ve killed every single one that shows up… And my generation has yet to have one….”
She looked at him with fear and worry. “I don’t want to lose one of my hatchlings…” she said as tears filled her eyes. Her mate rushed over, nuzzling her neck as he wrapped his wings around her. “It won’t love, and if it does, I’ll take them and give the hatchling to the dragons of Southern Icefields. At least then they will have a chance at living.”

The little hatchling looked up at her father. The adult guardian looked at his hatchling before picking her up in his mouth. She let out a squeak of surprise as he did, before dashing off and out of his home to take to the sky. For a single day The Guardian male flew, over the water and to the Southern Icefields. He landed in Snowsquall Tundra, only to be surrounded by growling and hissing ice dragons. He let the little guardian down to the ground gently before bowing his head. “Please… Keep her safe…” She blended into the snow as her bright red eyes looked at the huge dragons around her. One ice dragon looked at him in distaste. “Why should we help your kind, after all you’ve done to our home?”
“She is not like the fire dragons of the Ashfall Waste. She may have our eyes, but she is affected by the curse that haunts my mate’s family. This hatchling will not be able to use our fire magic, but your ice magic instead.”
A different dragon, a Pearlcatcher, stepped forward. “Why have no others like her ever come here to us? Why is she the first?”
“My kin have… Killed any of them that hatched… She is a part of my mate and I’s first nest… I couldn't let that happen to her. Every hatchling has a chance to make a difference. Maybe hers is to help our kind come together. But we will never know if she is dead.”

The little hatchling had stumbled over to the Pearlcatcher. She sat in front of her and looked at her and looked at her. The Pearlcatcher had ice blue butterfly wings and a black nose with long black whiskers. Her body had poison markings of a light grey color. She held onto her pearl tightly as she looked at the little guardian. The hatchling gave an innocent smile and waved lightly. “I will care for the hatchling… It was my ancestor the casted the curse in the first place, it should be my family to teach one of the cursed children.”
The male smiled at her. “Thank you.” He gave a soft nuzzle to his hatchling, before flying back to his mate.
The hatchling was named Winter by the Pearlcatcher. She grew until she was bigger than her adoptive mother and learned how to use her ice magic. The ice dragons lived up to their frozen nature for a while before letting her truly join their ranks. She made great friends and even found her own mate. Winter never heard from her father again, nor did she meet her brothers and sisters. Though perhaps, that may change in the future...
