Blue

A chill when through my core as I looked out the window into the endless frozen lands. I adjusted my tunic, uselessly pulling at it in a fruitless attempt to keep in more warmth. The never ending snowfall seemed to encase even house and home like frozen fossils.

Incoming footsteps interrupted my solace. "My liege, the roof has cracked again." I turned slightly, not quite enough to face the male.

"Freo, why are you still here?" I murmured, eyes downcast. Certainly Freo had his own worries to attend to. In this world, the idea of royalty collapsed. I had no true power over the people I ruled. It was wrong to collect money from people who only had enough for themselves while I was already blessed to have a solid foundation to live under. At least a partially solid foundation.

I could almost feel the tundra thinking, however it seemed as if there was a lack of it as the male responded, "I am here to serve you, my lord. This is my place and my duty."

"Freo do you not have other places to be? The world is falling, why do you wish to serve me when you are almost starving?" I asked, not coldly, but my voice held a chill. The other paused, letting my biting words hang in the air like a single snowflake falling to the ground.

"Do you wish for me to leave?"

Gosh. This man. "No," My admission was soft and genuine, "but I wish for you to care more about yourself."

I turned to see a pleasant smile on Freo's face. "Alright then. I'll go fix the crack in the roof." The tundra turned, but I stopped him with a small noise of disapproval. I hastily pulled off my scrappy shirt, and Freo hesitantly took it before walking out of my chamber. Heaven forbid that man looked out for himself first.

All the royal guards and servants where given food and shelter in exchange for their service. Because of the lack of food and shelter, the castle felt very barren for most days. Except for Freo. He refused a place to stay, and I only occasionally saw him in the dining hall at meal times.
