Icsariu doesn't get many contracts from Ista; they don't have much use for the skills of an assassin. Adhara, the clan matriarch, actively disapproves, and many of the clan follow her lead. He doesn't mind. It's a nice clan: small, eclectic, and mostly isolated, in the depths of the Sea. And as peaceloving and defensive as they are, who would expect them to be harbouring an assassin?

So he stayed. Adhara was easy to win over; a sad face, a few words of contrition, and Adhara was smiling and treating him like the prodigal son, welcoming his change of heart with protective wings. She assigned him to Lafiris, and gathering duty. It was dull, boring, monotonous work, that involved far too many social elements for his liking, but no matter. He'd stick it out, earn their trust. In a few months, perhaps he could ask to join the Rangers; it'd be easy to get beyond the clan's borders, then. He could pick his contract network back up easily enough then.

To his surprise, he didn't have to wait long at all. Barely a fortnight into his 'penitence', Von pulled him aside. He studied Icsariu's face carefully, staring so deeply into his eyes that Icsariu found himself flinching, deadly nature or no.

"I'm reassigning you," he said, eventually. "I think your... talents might be of better use elsewhere."

Something about the way he said it made Icsariu ask, giddy with potential.

"New orders from our illustrious leader?"

Von glared at him for the insubordination, but - to Icsariu's great surprise - shook his head.

"I am reassigning you. Inesha's waiting in the Hoard cavern. And Icsariu? I expect you to abide by the clan's rules. All of them."

It was as clear a warning as Icsariu had ever heard. How had Von known? Was it simply a threat, or had he caught Icsariu practising with his knives? And what on Sornieth could Inesha need him for, he wondered, bitterly. To hold the mirror while she adjusted her feathers? Unnerved, and disappointed at a seemingly dull assignment, he slunk away.

He was pleasantly surprised. Though murder continued to be frowned upon theft, it seemed, was one vice they were willing to put up with. Sometimes he was sent out alone, sometimes with his fellow thief, Dothan. His comings and goings were no longer remarked upon or monitored and he found himself suddenly, blissfully free to take up contracts again, as long as he could bring Inesha some new intelligence at the end of his trip.

Though most of the clan have accepted his taciturn nature and odd hours, there are still those who suspect him. Lafiris often eyes him with suspicion across the sleeping chamber, and Tarel and Dramartis often watch him with a little too much interest when their tasks overlap, but they're easily dealt with. Vela is more of a problem.

Icsariu doesn't really know much about the Seers. A True-born Wind dragon, there is very little magic in his blood and almost no presience whatsoever, but he knows enough to respect them. And, above all to avoid them. Vela, however, often seeks him out, fading in and out of existence before him, smiling her terrible smile and whispering 'Tick Tock, little fool. Tick tock.'

He isn't sure why it unnerves him so, but the words - and the voice that speaks them - often feature in his worst nightmares.

Though, recently, they've had some impressive competition.

Dothan caught Icsariu at an awkward moment - covered in the blood of a kill - and Icsariu was forced to kill him to keep the secret of his true employment. So when Dothan reappeared in the clan, smiling and taking jobs again, Icsariu was more than a little unnerved. He's sure he killed the other thief, so how did he return? Or, more ominously, what is it that now wears his skin?
