Remus never met his parents. His earliest memories are of foraging for insects and plants, and running to hide whenever he could hear the grumble of monsters. When the sun set he would wedge himself into a tiny burrow, and hope that none of the beasts that inhabit the darkness would spot him.
One day he was gathering bugs from within a log when he heard the sound of mighty footsteps. He turned, and through the trees saw a colossal beast - larger than he had ever seen before. Shimmering purple and red scales, enormous teeth, and a huge belly that rose and fell with its deep breath. Doing all he knew, the Skydancer scampered off. But the sound of his rapid footfalls attracted the attention of the beast, and it was after him. He desperately fled, but his aggressor was faster and larger. With a flap of its mighty wings, it took to the sky and landed before the Skydancer. The creature made all kinds of noises the skydancer did not understand. Cowering and shaking, the skydancer felt his legs go soft and he was unable to flee. After a long, tense moment, the creature moved forward and took the tiny skydancer into its hands, and flew off. A whole lot of things began to happen which the Skydancer did not entirely understand. He met more creatures who all made noises at him, gave him food and a soft place to lie. He was uneasy and uncooperative until he met others which resembled himself. They named him Remus, and he began to live alongside his savior, who after many weeks Remus learnt was named 'Jeremiah'. His solitary childhood stunted his growth in more ways than one. Even for a skydancer, Remus is very small, and to the disappointment of his adoptive father does not make a good warrior. It also took him many years to be able to communicate in the same tongue as his new clanmates. As he grew up in the castle, he was exposed to finery and literature, and although he can not fight he has decided to walk in his father's (enormous) footsteps and serve the King and his family. He partakes in scribing, introducing guests, and managing the king's appointments. While he gets on quite well with most of the royal family, Gideon is very demanding and demeaning of his servants. When he was younger, Remus would deliberately avoid the part of the castle or gardens where Gideon was lounging around. That came to an end when the angry prince gave him and earful for 'avoiding him'. Now Remus tries to keep his head held high and take the prince's onslaught with dignity. |
