There is an old folktale that goes like this. Long, long ago, when the world was young, a guardian made a pact with an ancient and powerful deity, one whose power predates the elemental gods of Sornieth. According to the legend, this guardian made an ultimate sacrifice in service of his beloved charge. In exchange, he gave over his own life to the service of this higher power, and was transformed in the process.

According to legend, this dragon took the form of an enormous winged wolf, imbued with certain powers and gifted with immortality. But in exchange for his long life, the creature was cursed to wander for eternity, coming to the aid of great heroes and champions in their time of need. He was to be the perfect sidekick, a helper from the shadows. But history was doomed to forget his name, to credit his accomplishments to others.

But that's just a story, certainly.

Ulryk is just a big wolf, prone to wandering, perhaps with a knack of being places at the right time. Surely there's nothing more to it than that, right?
