B I O G R A P H Y

Savil was described as many things when he was young: exuberant, lively, funny, quick, annoying, deceitful, mischievous. He was an energetic dragon in a warm home, and there were few better places to grow up. But so many things change when one grows up.

He couldn’t remember exactly what caused it, if there was a root cause, but the plague that swept through his home destroyed the peaceful joy he’d found. It was something out of the Plaguebringer’s own arsenal, leaving none who touched it alive. The clan grew desperate, and desperation brings out the worst in everyone. The infected were killed or banished, sometimes even burned alive. Their families were exiled. Even such extreme measures couldn’t seem to kill the sickness. There are few places worse for a skydancer than an area filled with despair, grief, and violence. Somehow, Savil became the final survivor. And then King found him, sitting by the rotting bodies of his family. Infected. King took Savil with him as an interesting toy and called him Joker. Through his experiments he managed to turn the plague that killed his family into a weapon. His body stabilized at the expense of his mind.

It took Savil, broken by grief and trauma as he was, a very long time to realize how far King had gone. In the beginning, perhaps he viewed it as a mercy when King was trying to save his life. His feelings changed the first time King sent him into a small, undefended clan with the orders to touch, to infect, as many as he could. He refused, and King hurt him. Savil, “Joker”, was a living weapon. He had been made into a contagion with a will and a heart. King wanted to use him. Repayment, he claimed. Savil would be dead if he hadn’t intervened. Savil did not want to live to kill. King didn’t care.

B I O G R A P H Y

Breaking King’s hold took time. He was held prisoner after that, stripped of his will. He wasn’t sure what accursed power allowed King to puppet another being so thoroughly, but it surely wasn’t within the realm of the nine. A gold-red crown was forced into his brow, and he moved by King’s will alone. He was forced to watch as countless poor souls fell beneath his pestilence, powerless to stop it. He was infection incarnate, and there was no cure. But Savil bided his time. He stopped struggling, as if he were finally broken, and waited until King dropped his guard and loosened his leash. When his chance finally came, he ripped the bloodied crown from his head and fled with all his strength into the night.

Savil hid for months, terrified that he’d see a golden imperial descending upon him to reclaim his puppet once more. But eventually, he realized that he had successfully escaped. He was free. He was alone. He couldn’t join a new clan with his affliction, not when the very air around him was toxic. Not when King had turned him into such a vile monster. His anger grew with every passing day, with every footstep that left wilting plants and tainted soil. Revenge, his soul cried, make him pay for what he’s done! Like a mantra in his head, he couldn’t let go of the idea. He reclaimed his original name, casting aside the Joker moniker, and resolved himself to avenge himself and his victims at any cost. King managed to change Savil’s plague into a weapon, and it would be the instrument of his death.

But when Savil finally tracked King down, he discovered the reason that King didn’t try to find him again. He had replacements. More puppets to dance to his tune. They weren’t controlled as he was, but they were no freer. Savil’s rage grew, but his rationality remained. He could not defeat such a force alone. He would cut the strings of the puppets dancing to King’s tune and teach them a new song of fury. King had taught him well to bide his time, and there would be a chance to strike.
