Sterling
Member of the Order of the Truesouls/Coli Fighter

Sterling serves an elite Light warrior's guild called the Order of the Truesouls. In the guild, there is a process called 'duality', which allows the warriors to separate the darker part of themselves into a completely different personality. This dark side, called the 'bloodsoul', is the personality that the warriors can slip into when forced to kill someone. It is meant to keep their normal self, or the 'truesoul', from becoming soiled with the bloodshed of their enemies.

When the soul halves are separated, the truesoul constantly and continuously rejects the bloodsoul, and in this way, the personalities are kept separate until the time comes for the bloodsoul to take over. The training required for this is extensive and it can take many decades to build up the strength and willpower to keep the darker soul from sullying the innocent one.

For the most part, this system works well. Every once in awhile, however, one of the bloodsouls would reject their innocent counterpart instead of the other way around and would cause chaos within the warrior, often leading up to the loss of sanity and awareness. This is typically caused by weakness of will. Other times, the bloodsoul and the truesoul merge and become one, sullying the innocent part of themselves. This is caused by a weakening in the strength of the warrior's resolve.

Such a thing happened to Sterling. Her souls merged and became one, but the bloodsoul retained a bit of its independence. It is able to manifest itself as another form of herself, and can be extremely volatile.

Another warrior, Lian, offered to try soulmelding with her; that is, substituting herself for the soul of light that Sterling had lost. This process is extremely delicate and easily failed, wherein both the participants could die or be joined completely, becoming one being of chaos. Luckily, they were compatible, and the meld worked.

In this way, they were both able to continue working for the guild. Sterling and Lian are practically inseparable; although they can be apart, the longer they stay that way, the higher the risk of Sterling's bloodsoul manifesting. When it does manifest, it requires a great deal of effort on both their parts to subdue it again.
