Scourge

Scourge never looked back.
Not when he left the Clan of Rattling Bone, not when he saw the look on his parents's face every time they turned to address him.
He was a sacrifice, born on an important day together with two other batches of hatchlings.
And they were practically identical, with only two coming out of their shells as skydancers.
And they were all hungry, and eager for blood.
Except for Scourge.
He had to be the one with the worst luck.
The runt of the litter.
He was supposed to be a Bloodworm.
But first, he had to kill. But he couldn't do that, could he?
Scourge didn't want to hurt anything.
He had no wish to become a Bloodworm.
The spiral had only killed once, and it had been out of self defense.
It was an incident that the clan never spoke of again.
In the end, Achilles, his father and the representative of the Bloodworms of the clan had imprinted the marks on him, but by the time he had done so, the blood was dried and dark.
They were old.
And now, any Bloodworm who saw Scourge would know what he was.
A failure, a shame, he didn't even deserve to serve the Plagumother herself.
Being a Plague dragon was always about survival.
Always.
If you weren't strong enough, it wasn't long before you would be sent to the Plaguemother.
And so he left.
He'd found a clan, after fleeing to the Icewarden's domain.
Crystallos Volatus, the Clan of the Crystal Flight.
There were other dragons there who'd fled from the same clan, though for different reasons.
Lakshmi and Sasuke and Eden and Xavven and oh Icewarden there were so many, why were there so many?
"My brother!" Xavven greeted him, when he found Scourge with Lakshmi, coaxing him to drink a herbal brew for his weakened body.
"I am no relative of yours," Scourge averted his eyes. Why couldn't he have been born a normal dragon? Oh, the life he could've lived.
"All spirals are my kin, no matter what," Xavven declared.
Scourge was comforted slightly by his enthusiasm, "Even if they're not normal?"
"My dear, no one is normal. Diversity exists in this world for a reason." Lakshmi smiled.


Scourge liked it here.
No more running or hiding or constant competition with his own brothers and sisters.
And although Bloodworms couldn't burrow into the ice, he didn't mind living above ground.
The best part?
He had a home.
Sure, the clan was still small, but it was growing, welcoming dragons and travelers and offering them homes or at least, temporary refuge.
He liked it here, he liked their kindness and enthusiasm.
And he couldn't imagine anywhere he'd be happier.
It was a new beginning for Scourge.
The spiral had friends and, well, family, and he had a home.
And he'd like to keep it that way.
