BIO

Umber is the designated navigator of the Dry Winds Guild. No one knows the unspoken rules of the sky like Umber. To other dragons, navigating thermals and updrafts can be mind-boggling, but to Umber- it’s easy peasy! Navigating social interactions, on the other hand...now that’s a real challenge.

It’s not like they dislike conversations, though. Talking has just always been Umber’s kryptonite. Maybe it’s because they have a naturally monotonous voice, or because they have a tendency to be a bit too blunt. Or perhaps it’s because they’re a bit insecure and haaaate when it shows. Talking is just hard. They prefer to write, instead.

The mottled black-and-white coatl has always been a bit quirky. They like to take things at their own pace, away from loud, distracting noises and stressful situations. Of course, the vast open skies calls to them. They do not like the confinement of the lair- the wide open plains is their peace of mind. Flying is their stress-reliever, so they prefer to be away from the lair as much as possible. For a guild full of treasure hunters and explorers- having a navigator who will jump at every opportunity to be away from the lair is the Best which is why Umber has become quite popular.

Whenever a team of spelunkers is rearing to sneak into beastclan territory, Umber guides them through the safest paths...or the most dangerous, whatever the team is up to. Since writing has become a hobby for them, they frequently send letters to their many relatives. Despite the distance, they have a close bond with their family. Occasionally, they like to sing with the avian familiars who assist them during flight. But only when there’s no one else around.

HISTORY

Umber grew up in a strict family. Their mother, upholding to the old faith that dull-colored plumage was an ill omen, feared that her hatchlings would be harassed for their feathers. She trained them mercilessly in order to teach them how to protect themselves. Umber received the harshest treatment. When they were overwhelmed, Umber would panic and shriek and writhe, much to their mother's confusion. The only thing that calmed them down was their avian familiar, who let Umber stroke its feathers while it chirruped quietly and contently.

Finally, the day came when Umber couldn't take the rigorous training anymore and ran away from Dry Winds. The entire clan erupted into havoc upon seeing their head guard breakdown for the first time, unable to find her child. They frantically searched the entire Windswept Plateau for the missing hatchling, until they finally found the tiny coatl, curled up a bird's nest, refusing to return to their mother.

It was then that Dry Winds realized something was terribly wrong, and intervened. The peacekeeper, Endless, took Umber under her wing and the rest of Umber's childhood was relatively peaceful. Umber has always had a passion for flight. They never intended to make it their profession, however, that's just what happened when the guild began to recognize and rely on Umber's skill as a navigator. Umber gladly took up the job, since it granted them the two things they loved most: flying and being away from the lair.

One fateful day, while Umber was flying, another dragon crashed into them, nearly getting them both killed, and, while in a concussed stupor, called them "the prettiest dragon I've ever met." This is how Umber met Camille, the coatl who would eventually become their mate.

- Umber loves birds. Many avian familiars on this territory recognize and trust Umber as their friend.
