POLARIS
Chef
tumblr_nvb4xqYbv71uc01tdo5_500.png
No one’s quite sure of Polaris’ past. All they know is that, somewhere within the confines of the Southern Icefield, he learned how to cook. And bake. And not just “cook” and “bake,” but to make the best dishes you will ever have the honor of tasting. He’s never told anyone about his past- not even, possibly, Kelsus- but no one’s ever thought to ask. Partly because of that life rule to never irritate the one who handles your food, but also just because Polaris is more than a little intimidating.

The truth is, Polaris didn’t come from any kind of special or tragic past. He was born on the edges of the Icewarden’s land, where life wasn’t too barren or difficult, to a clan that encouraged hatchlings to pursue their interests. And, although Polaris initially had many interests, it soon narrowed down to being able to create things, whether it be art, or inventions, or food. Eventually, it changed to just being food, and Polaris set his goal to becoming the best chef in Sornieth. In this pursuit, Polaris decided he had to travel all of Sornieth in order to try all of the food he possibly could and discover ways to improve and make these foods.

Eventually, Polaris had achieved his goal of travelling all over Sornieth, with his last stop being the Sunbeam Ruins (mainly due to travelling in a slightly roundabout fashion). He found this culture, that of the light dragons, and their food, most interesting of all- he had done research before starting his journey and had actually, specifically, designed his journey so that it would be the last place he visited before, presumably, returning to his birth clan. Always save the best for last, right?

As it turned out, Polaris would never reach his birth clan again. While he was in the Sunbeam Ruins, Polaris began to run short of treasure, and so offered to cook for various clans in exchange for payment. Upon his interested customers was a pearlcatcher who went by the name of Kelsus- how very strange this leader was, Polaris briefly thought, being a wind dragon but being the leader of a light clan. Brushing this thought away, Polaris returned to her clan- Clan Yulon- and was immediately shocked by how warm everything was. No pun intended. The clan, however, had much more to be shocked about- it was quite strange for such a gruff imperial to not only be a chef, but also to have the skill that Polaris possessed at this occupation. Although it was clear that Polaris was not looking for a home, Kelsus invited him to stay after the urging of clan members. And, although Polaris himself did not think he was looking for a home, he found himself thinking about it and, eventually, accepting the offer.

Polaris still gives off a very surly vibe, and still manages to intimidate many of his clanmates; some, though, have learned to ignore this and love to try and annoy him. Polaris, they have learned, is not as tough as he seems to be; he is, in fact, very easygoing, and willing to tolerate quite a bit. No matter how much dragons persist, though, they have still not learned of Polaris’ past. Most assume it’s due to him having some horrible, secretive past; no one has figured out yet that he just prefers not to talk about himself and would prefer to focus on his food. Which is, obviously, amazing. After all, Polaris can make dirt taste like a gourmet food- in fact, he has done this, as a sort of “joke” that no one other than him found funny.

Many visitors come and go from Clan Gladehaven, but every so often, one or two of them may stay here for a home. Polaris heard of this notion, and several pleasant accounts from its residents, and thought to himself that he would like to try and make a home for himself there as well. He had been searching for a new home from the Sunbeam Ruins; he felt that now was a time to take a new chance in life. Together with a Fae then named Bloodstone, he set off for the Viridian Labyrinth to find out what Gladehaven was all about. And his first impression surely set his path in stone.

“How do you feel about the trip, Polaris?” Bloodstone asked her clanmate with interest.

“I’m not sure. I have hopes, and I have worries,” Polaris sighed, “But ultimately, I think I want to make this change.”

“I think I do too,” Bloodstone replied, but her voice was laced with unsureness. The two comforted each other through the trip, where Polaris spoke of his homeland, the Southern Icefield. Bloodstone seemed to take a keen interest in his descriptions and held it close to her heart as they traveled.

Upon their arrival, Bloodstone felt the warmth of Gladehaven, but decided she actually wanted to go to the land of the Icewarden herself. Polaris respected this, and instead, had an itch to stay here in the Labyrinth. At first glance, those who came to greet the two dragons did not expect Polaris to take residence here; yet when a particular Imperial saw a warm gleam in his icy eyes, he knew there was more to Polaris than meets the eye. It contrasted his appearance — Polaris came across as stoic, and a bit cold, at first. Perhaps it was a remnant of the icy lands he originated from. Polaris feared it would put off his new clanmates, but he couldn’t be more wrong, when this leafy Imperial came before him with a strong energy of hospitality.

“A warm welcome to the both of you. I am Matcha,” the Imperial introduced. “Please, come sit, and enjoy a fresh brew of tea.”

Tea? This is strange, he has never been offered tea as a welcoming gesture before. Mildly shocked, Polaris responded with a nod and his name, “Polaris.” Regardless, he was very grateful for the kind gesture, and sipped from the porcelain cup.

“Tell me, where are you from?” Matcha inquired, curious to learn more about this enigmatic individual.

Polaris, reserved, spoke shortly. “I just arrived from the Sunbeam Ruins,” he answered. His words were mildly awkward, nervous. He wasn’t used to such a pleasant scenario as this.

“As did I,” Matcha responded, looking directly at Polaris to show off his golden eyes.

Surprisingly, Polaris perked up at this — he felt a sense of security, knowing someone came from where he just did. Even so, he didn’t have the energy to discuss much tonight, after so much traveling. But Matcha showed a particular interest in him that made him want to stay — and in all honestly, Polaris was equally as intrigued by the other Imperial. So, with only a few small words, Matcha attempted to get to know a little more about his past. Through smalltalk, the two of them found a common interest in cooking; Polaris was a chef, while Matcha worked with drinks. As time went on, though, he appeared more and more exhausted, and as he hoped, Matcha picked up on the cue.

“I think you deserve some rest, Polaris. Your journey must have been tiring. However, do come back for tea soon — I’d love to learn more about you,” he admitted with a playful tone. The playful tone was unexpected, and Polaris couldn’t help but fluster.

“Yes— I should,” Polaris nodded. “Have a good night.” He turned and left to find a place to rest as guided by others in the clan.

As he and Bloodstone left to find a place to sleep, Polaris felt a warmth in his cheeks that wouldn’t go away. There was something special about Matcha, something interesting, something alluring, that made him want to get to know him more. With a deep breath, he quieted himself, and focused on sleep, for he had a new journey ahead of him — greater than the one he just finished.
