Biography

Avocados are a large, creamy fruit with dark, leathery skin and a giant pit. They're native to the Americas and are technically giant berries from avocado trees.

Avocados are well known for their very high fat content and high nutritional value, packed with monosaturated fats (good for lowering cholesterol), potassium, vitamin E, vitamin C, and fiber. They're popular in salads and savory dishes. They're also popular in sweets. Avocados are used in everything from milkshakes to ice cream.

That sounds great and all, but avocados aren't all rainbows and unicorns. The pits, leaves, bark, and skin of avocados are extremely toxic to pets. The industry is also extremely controversial for a variety of reasons. Avocados are one of the most environmentally demanding fruits to produce commercially, with one of the highest water demands of any fruit. It takes a whopping 70 liters of water to produce only one avocado, compared to the 22 liters for an orange and 5 liters for a tomato.
