Biography

I asked him, finally and bluntly, where he had come from and what had happened to him. I asked him if he had a clan he had left, a family.

“Family?” He sniffed - right in my face. It was such a concentrated, purposeful inhalation that my frills fluttered toward him slightly. “You smell like family.”

It seems that is all that matters.

MARLOWE
CLAN FOUNDER | RANGER
Marlowe has been alone for most of his young life. His egg was abandoned for reasons he does not know (whether it was a choice by his parents, or there were external circumstances) and although he has crossed paths with several clans in his wanderings, he always moves on. Life for a lone tundra hatchling was not easy (though finding food is far from difficult in the Viridian Labyrinth, especially when you eat plants), and many dragons might consider Marlowe’s development “stunted” because of this. He never learned to read or write, having no one to teach him, and his understanding of body language and social cues is extremely limited. He tends to speak slowly, taking time to formulate his words as they do not come easily to him (and there are many times where he will phrase things in unusual ways simply because that is all he knows). However, despite what this may cause some dragons to think (exacerbated by the stereotypes about his breed), Marlowe is very smart. Survival skills are second nature to him and has an innate sense for danger. He may not understand what another dragon is necessarily talking about, but he knows how they are going to physically react to something and whether they are a threat or not. Those who know him wholeheartedly trust his judge of character.

Marlowe’s strongest emotional ties (besides to Ainsley) are, surprisingly, not to dragons at all. In his earliest days, he stumbled upon a Dunhoof herd and although he didn’t belong to any clan they had alliances with, they took him in and cared for him. He did not stay with them long, but he contacts them regularly. His travels through the Viridian Labyrinth often took him back to familiar paths and areas, and he would divert his (meandering) route to stop by and see them whenever he could. If he ever passed by other centaur herds (those that were not aggressive towards dragons, at least), he would surprise them with his memory of their customs and ask them amiably to pass his words on to the herd that had taken him in. More recently, Ainsley has taken to writing letters that he dictates to send back, and the more reliable and consistent communication has renewed and invigorated the interesting bond between dragon and centaurs.

He has little explanation for his choice to stay with Ainsley after crossing paths with her. He sensed that she needed him, and from the first night he slept beside her, Marlowe ceased feeling that constant urge - that unwavering pull - that kept him wandering. At first he planned (as concretely as he plans anything) to help her get her feet under her, to teach her the lay of the land. In the end, however, he never left. When they stumbled upon the edge of the Shrieking Wilds and the cliff edge that would become their clan’s lair, he knew he was home.

Birchtail hopes xe will be able to find it by going out on xir own. Active and passionate about trying anything and everything.
