BACKSTORY
Ragnar was born so very long ago he's almost forgotten his name. While he wasn't one of the first dragons hatched in Sornieth, he's still ancient. In his time, society had only begun to pull itself together. Life was difficult, and clans were exclusively one element.
He died in a battle on Arcane soil. An alliance of Shadow clans had allied with Plague clans in an attempt to steal some Arcane artifacts... Ragnar's hatchlings, young adults at the time, came with their father to wage war. And while Arcane territory had been conquered that bloody day, Ragnar was wounded by Arcane mages. Crippled, he passed away in foreign lands, away from his mate and home.
But he didn't move on. His spirit remained tethered to the land, as his desire to stay with his hatchlings was so strong. Ragnar watched over them as they grew and lived on the Arcane land that had cost so many dragons their lives. But this proud father never expected them to have a falling out. Two went to serve the Plaguebringer, while one went to serve the Gladekeeper. Unable to communicate with them, he could not convince them to stay.
And he could not leave the forest where he died.
Heartbroken, centuries upon centuries passed. Ragnar couldn't enter the spirit realm, as he had chosen to stay behind. But he couldn't interact with the living either. It was lonely, and Ragnar spent most of the time curled up at the base of Starwood Strand's tallest tree. There was no point in being in the accursed Arcane forest any more, for his hatchlings had left and lived their lives. He ignored the occasional dragons that wandered into the area, and despised the clans that would rise and fall around him. Ragnar went into a sort of sleep, so tired of living like this.
Until one day, a curious little Skydancer moved onto the land. A hatchling surrounded by older dragons who built up a town. The hatchling would stare and shout at him, but her clanmates simply thought that the Skydancer had an imaginary friend. Her extraordinary magical capabilities let her see into the ether, let her see Ragnar.
She often snuck away from her little clan's settlement to visit him, curious. Ragnar eventually 'woke up' and realized that he was no longer alone. This dragon could see and hear him, but not touch him. He recognized her as kin-- a fellow Shadow dragon. After a brief discussion about why he was 'on her land', the hatchling was called back by a Coatl. The Skydancer, who introduced herself as Eotua, waved farewell as the Coatl chastised her. The next time Eotua came, she tried to give him food... which, he could not eat.
The gesture warmed his heart, though, and Ragnar moved closer to the town so Eotua wouldn't have to sneak out quite as far. They became friends, and as Eotua grew up, Ragnar began to see her as a daughter. She would teach him all about current events in Sornieth (such as the Beastclan Uprising, or how dragons of different elements lived together). He would provide support and advice for her (as her parents are long gone).
But as Plague dragons began to move into Clan Acamar, his existence became known to the rest of the clan. These dragons, who'd been on death's door with the Plague, could see him. They tend to steer clear of him, but Teren occasionally visits him. Those who cannot see him tend to just live their lives, unless a dragon who can see him is talking with him. Then they might get nosy and start asking questions.
Ragnar is alright with that. After ages of loneliness, even endless interrogations are welcome.
But deep down, Ragnar is fearful. He knows Eotua is getting older, and that eventually she'll pass. The clan will eventually fade into crumbling ruins. He'll be alone once more. Selfishly, he hopes that Eotua stays behind with him.
He knows that's wrong to wish for. His hatchlings (likely) moved onto the spirit realm, and Eotua should too. Nobody should stay behind, stuck in a cruel limbo state for eternity.
Ragnar made that choice, though. And while his new friends won't be around forever, he's going to try and live in the moment with them. He wants to make the most of the time he does have with Clan Acamar.
