{Long ago, there was once a powerful witch with the power to change her shape into that of a winged serpent-beast; people spoke of dragons in hushed whispers, and of dark powers they could not truly comprehend. Fear dogged her steps, for those without talent for the arcane arts could never understand the complexities of those few who did.
One day a noble lord approached the witch, offering gifts of finery and beauty to the one he claimed to have fallen in love with. And he charmed the witch, seduced her into loving him--never before had she been treated so kindly by a man. Being courted was a new experience, and she thrived under the affections she believed to be true. He asked for her hand in marriage, and being foolishly in love she accepted.
And then one day he came to her, bearing a small box. "Inside," he told the witch. "Is a final token of my love, your wedding gift." A pair of golden bracelets set upon silk. She was overjoyed at such a gift and hurried to slip them on.
And when they had slid over her wrists, she screamed. Desperately she tried to remove them, even as she was forced into her dragon-shape, but the lord only laughed before twisting the knife of betrayal further.
He had never loved her, but rather her power. Family guardians were a symbol of status, and the more rare and powerful creatures were highly sought after; a witch was the rarest and most powerful guardian of all. "From now on, you will come to the aid of my blood, wherever it may be and do all in your power to protect them. And those bracelets have been enchanted by the strongest magic I could find. Only one of my blood will ever be able to free you."
"Then you had best hope that none of your blood ever remove them," she vowed, the hiss of scales against each other as she twisted in circles underscoring the magic in her voice. "For if they are ever removed, I will seek my vengeance upon all who carry your blood, not matter how little. This I swear."
And so the witch was enslaved, and the man's descendants forever warned against removing the golden shackles--for that is what the bracelets truly were--from the dragon in their midst lest she destroy them all.}
