In Sparrow's old clan, they had a saying; The soul of a warrior is as hard as their hide, as sharp as their claws, and as fierce as a God. Sparrowhawk was not that. Even as a hatchling, he didn't shove at the others or fight over meals. He backed down from every confrontation, named all the toys, and snuck out of the lair only to come back with flowers and berries and grasses to press into empty books he'd found in the scavenger heap. So they took away his flowers, started his training early, and pushed him to be stronger, better, tougher. Sparrow tried. He worked hard at his training, and stopped sneaking off into the fields, and didn't let anyone see him cry when they threw away his flower book. But he couldn't make himself care about winning, or relish a fight, or stop thinking about how much he'd rather be out in the meadows, weaving flowers into a crown. By the time he was grown, he was one of the most skilled young warriors in the clan. But he was not the toughest, or the sharpest, or the fiercest. The lack of spirit was obvious to all, because they were a clan of warriors, with the proudest of traditions and strictest of codes. So when they found a patchwork book with pressed flowers hidden amongst his battle armor, they were succinct and frank in telling him to leave. Sparrowhawk had been sure the creatures of the burning wastes or the craggy expanse would finish him, but after months of traveling he had to admit that he might perhaps live after all. That left only the gaping, hollow loneliness to contend with, and that was a familiar foe. He expected the ruins of the Citadel to be empty when he arrived, and was startled by the cold eyes of dozens of dragons that emerged from the shadows, dwarfed by their surroundings. He was caught as he always was between his nature and his training- flee, or fight. He was outnumbered and in their territory, but a true warrior never backed down. And, judging from the general disarray, they could very well be bandits. A pale, golden eyed guardian stepped out from the mob, and asked what he was doing there. Sparrow, remembering his manners, replied that he was an wanderer, just passing through. She watched him with a quiet, intelligent gaze, and said he was welcome to stay the night, if he was weary from his travels. Sparrow felt he was weary from a great many things, and so he stayed. And he continued to stay, until Leto asked if he would train the hatchlings, and the children brought him flowers for his lair as thanks. |
