Story of the Soulless

Birth of the King
Years spent searching, researching, experimenting, and calling led at last to the birth of this vessel, which would serve as the body for the Queen's brother. He was chosen from dozens of others; refined through several generations of summoners fueled by constant offerings to the Plaguebringer.

When he was born, the Queen selected him from the nest and through the course of his childhood he was prepared by the Summoner Phaedra for his purpose. He was to house the soul of the Queen's brother. Such a thing may have horrified many dragons, as it would doubtlessly result in the destruction of his own essence as it was replaced by that of another. It did not horrify him, however, as for all his life he was taught it was the highest honor that might exist for him. Even more than those honored dragons which came to serve the Plaguebringer herself, either in life or with their death. He was made ready, physically and mentally for this purpose, trained, taught, and saturated with powerful and unknown magics.

Art by Minstri
On the eve of his adulthood he was taken by the Summoner and the Queen to a hidden place high above the Rotrock cliffs. Here a great pool had been prepared with fluids siphoned away from the Wyrmwound. All around it, there were spires of bone decorated with magical foci and tribal offerings. Here, this dragon gave a final look to the two who stood with him. A tremble of fear and excitement and eagerness briefly ran rampant through his long, coltish legs. "I go in without a name, and I will come back another." He promised and went willingly forward.

The two females watched as the young dragon sank into the pool. They watched as it started thrashing. They watched as it became something which could never have been mistaken for a dragon. A terror of mouths and teeth and eyes - of ruined flesh - a thing with too many wings, too many limbs, all reaching, grasping, fighting. Every movement of every part of the thing motivated by nothing more or less than panic. "Pull him out, before he drowns." Minstri hissed, and Phaedra did so. The Skydancer had been a tiny pup beside the Ridgeback going in, but whatever had become of it now, was almost too large for her to manage, especially with its thrashing.

But she managed. The two of them returned with the thing, taking it into a deep, hidden chamber. Phaedra's work was done, and Minstri dismissed her. The thing was kept there for a very long time. Seasons passed and most dragons forgot entirely about the work of Phaedra and her Summoners.

Minstri tended to it, growing it, and refining it until, at last, it spoke, and she knew the success of her work. They were not the words she had been expected, but they pleased her nonetheless.

"Sister, what have you done to me?"

When the thing emerged from the chamber where it had been hidden, Minstri called all the clan to assemble. They saw him then, a handsome Skydancer of deliberate, if not natural, grace. His body was covered in runes and sigils, all drawn on with Minstri's own blood. She introduced him to the clan, Sovri, her brother, their King.

Life of the King
Sovri served as the clan's king for a long time following this. His authority was quite absolute, though given mainly by the Queen's word. It is not to say he had none of his own merits, but rather that the clan was far more accustomed to their Queen, and Sovri was surprisingly unlike her. He possessed none of her brilliant madness which had made many of the clan fanatics to her name. Instead he was concerned with more direct and material things, which helped immensely in growing the wealth and power of the clan, things with which he is more concerned than his sister. Though still, he did all of this in service to her, for her love of the clan did he want it to thrive, and more than thrive. He was ruthless, shrewd, clever and just a little cruel.

However, there was always still something not quite right. Sovri would spend long periods of time in an unresponsive, trance-like state. During this time he was waited on by numerous servants of the clan and treated more like some kind of idol or object than a dragon. Though he was not useless during these periods, as he radiated a powerful aura which could quickly saturate a room. The aura could heal wounds and occasional aid in overcoming diseases and poisons in those exposed to it. So the injured would sometimes be brought to his chamber for healing. This came with a cost, however, as the healing often came with strong mutagenic effects. While lucid he dismissed all but two servants, the Imperial Twins

Fall of the King
The vessel failed. Sovri was king and would be king again, but not in this body.

The Clan of Singing Blood had finally laid claim to territory within the Wyrmwound itself. Passages were excavated, routes secured. The Ancient Inner Keep was theirs. A gleaming fortress of bone and stone and corruption for which they had long fought. The queen's council and the clan's foremost officials relocated to the Inner Keep. The main hub of the clan, however, remained on the Rotrock Rim, since it's easier to conduct trade and manage the wider territory in the Boneyard from there.

Problems began soon after the move. The King fell ill. He retained a state of lucidity throughout the troubles. It didn't help. The King's body seemed to be deteriorating at a disturbing rate. It did not merely wither and rot away, but became… unstable. Rapid mutations, healed, cut off, or rotting away, then returning the next day or even the next hour. Minstri was overcome with frequent fits of rage and frustration, attacking members of her council.

It was Siekte who came to the answer. The High Priestess was forced to go to Sahko for help and confirmation of her theory; she did so, even though she hated the spiral with every inch of her. Being near him caused her loathing to boil over and her skin would break out even more furiously with blisters and pustules. To ease the suffering of her Queen, she sought his aid and worked with him in his blasphemous lab.
"He is elementally unstable. Bringing him near to the Wyrmwound has disrupted the binding between his soul and the body you selected for him." Sahko said, before fleeing the hall at top speed before the curses the Queen leveled at him could take hold and tear him asunder.

Siekte worked for weeks trying to find a solution. Removing the King from the Inner Keep did not help. Nothing seemed to help as plague magics ravaged about his body uncontrollably, and ran into constant conflict with something else. Some foreign essence within his soul, feeding it and fueling it like a fire which was quickly consuming him.

Sovri called his sister to his side, and she came. By now all her fury had melted away into exhaustion. "There's nothing for it now, Min. But I'm not going anywhere, I promise. I'll always come back to you, and you know it. You know I can't do anything else." The ruined Skydancer seemed to smile at her. "You have to unbind the summoning on me. Do that, and my soul - my mind goes back, but I'll be waiting now, I know where you are now, and I'll find you again. The right way this time."

"But I have you now. We are free here. I am happy here."

Minstri did not seem like the Queen of a powerful clan of fanatics who worshiped her every action. She seemed like a frightened little girl. She seemed like his little sister. Four red eyes looking at him, filled with uncertainty and loss. Seeing that made him happy beyond measure. He had not seen her look like that in a long time. She had become real again.

The two sat together in silence for a long time. Minstri released the binding on her brother's soul.

Life Reclaimed
Once the binding was released the body which had served as Sovri's vessel, recovered quickly. Minstri could not bare to look at it, so Siekte took it into her care. The priestess worked to heal him and found there still lived a dragon within. The dragon who had been born there.

The withered skydancer had no memory of the intervening time. No memories after the moment his body became host to the Queen's brother. After healing him, the priestess was left uncertain as to how she might guide him, and he was too young and inexperienced of mind to know himself what course to take. The memories of his past life were also indistinct and of little help. Siekte didn't think she could invite the new young skydancer into their clan's ranks. He would be likely to agitate the Queen with his mere existence. He still had the face of their king. The other members of the clan might be disturbed or take advantage of that. So, she went to Finnigan and Susan to see if they might help find the Skydancer a new home. If not, then, it would be fitting he find his home in the Host of the Plaguebringer, ending his line and the Quest which he had been a part of.

Next Chapter
Both Susan and Finnigan had been close to the king, but they were also among the kindest dragons in the Clan and were happy to help the Skydancer find a new home. For the time being, he was simply called Vessel, as no proper name came leaping to the front of anyone's mind for him. Susan assured him that he would find a proper one eventually, but Finn laughed it off, saying names were only useful for keeping records of someone and getting their attention.

It was in the company of an aging and gruesome ridgeback that he finally came to leave his birth clan. She introduced herself as Misery and said she had come to the clan to trade. The ridgeback spoke fondly of the clan's healers, and the ointment she acquired from them to soothe the aching scar tissue that wrapped most of her upper body. Her visits were somewhat regular, and so the skydancer became familiar with her harsh, yet not unkind, mannerisms.

The young skydancer was somewhat enchanted by Misery's tales of the continent. He had never been outside the clan's borders, much less as far as the Icewarden's domain. His caretakers were worried, however, that he was much too weak and naive to be traveling Sornieth alone. Seeing him crestfallen, Misery offered a solution. "Let the whelp come with me. We'll prepare him to fend for himself, if nothing else."

Haven
Clan Haven was a strange place, especially for such a young dragon, but they were welcoming nonetheless. His new clanmates lacked the fanatical furvour of Minstri's followers, coming form many different parts of Sornieth and with diverse backgrounds. Despite constant tension between different groups, the skydancer found life to be peaceful and easy among them.

They quickly found out that he had an aptitude for magic, and with the help of the clan's mages Vessel began to learn to harness his power. He eventually drew the attention of Penance, who quickly took a liking to the young dragon. Her influence was strong, and she soon took over his teaching. The ridgeback began him Vel, a name that the skydancer was pleased to accept.

Under the instruction of the necromancer, he has begun learning to harness the same twisted magic. But strong plague energy still flows through him, and this necrotic magic is not the same as his mentor's. His loyalty is to the Plaguemother, and through Penance's teachings he grows more able to serve her will.
