Cadmus the gentle serpent A greek hero who was sent to search for his sister Europa and instead ended up founding the city of Thebes; Cadmus slew a dragon that killed some of his men, unaware that the dragon was sacred to Ares, and was thereafter beset by ill fortune- eventually,he wished that if the god's cared so much for the life of a serpent that he should be one himself in penance, and both he and his wife Harmonia were turned into snakes |

I had a long backstory written out for this guy once (based on rp with his parent's owner), but lost the file ages ago. :/ Since his early life is based on another clan's lore (which has changed since) I will not go into too much detail on his family.

Basically his birthclan was not a nice place to be, full of unsavory sorts, and his father an aloof assassin. He was born physically somewhat weak and bruised easily (sort of like hemophilia or another blood disease but without me following the actual disease at all closely), which made his father somewhat protective of him despite being otherwise cold. He was never allowed to train with his sister and lived a very restricted life. He wasn't exactly unhappy, but he sure wasn't happy, either. A caravan from the Grotto passed through the area while he was still young. They understandably kept their distance from his birth clan, but not so much that Cadmus didn't end up meeting and taking a liking to them. Genuinely friendly dragons with lots of books and little trinkets, who didn't discourage him from doing things on account of his condition? It was so different from what he knew. (I should figure out sometime which members were in this group). Before they left the area, the caravan negotiated with Cadmus's clan to take the young coatl with them. His parents were quick to accept-- it was clear that Cadmus wasn't happy at home and he was nearing an age where he could be independent anyway. As a member of the Grotto, Cadmus quickly dove into learning the basics of dozens of trades and took a liking to poetry and music. He learned basic healing skills to better handle his condition and trained his stamina. Before long, he even found a crush. He kept some contact with his birth clan through letters to and from his mother, but they often brought more pain than comfort. He would hear about all the hardship his birth clan was going through and his father becoming even more cold. His clanmates noticed Cadmus becoming more closed off every time he received a letter and did what they could to comfort him. It took years, but eventually found some closure and moved on from his first clan. Bonding with and caring for his familiar helped with this-- the amphithere's coloring reminded him of his father, but the little snake was vulnerable and affectionate in ways his real parent never was. Ajax can often be found curled up under Cadmus's feathers. These days, Cadmus just wants to live life to its fullest. Take risks, get hurt sometimes, and appreciate both the good and the bad. Oh, and he did end up as the partner to that crush of his. Aella was completely oblivious to his interest, but his clanmates started pushing her toward him when he had it rough, and once they started talking they found a lot to talk about. |
