Who the hell's Bucky?

Bucky is Shadetouched.

This wasn't always the case. Growing up, he was best friends with Cap, who at the time was a sickly little Fae with strong principles, an infallible sense of loyalty, and no self-preservation instinct whatsoever. Bucky became something of a protector to him, always there to step in and fight at his side when Cap's words weren't enough and a physical edge was needed. The two were inseparable.

Then the War with the Shade came. Their Clan allied itself with the local Beastclans to fight as a joint force, and Bucky was recruited. While he was on the front lines, imagining Cap safe at home, his friend underwent a miraculous transformation.

The next time they met, Cap was an Imperial. Though his physical form had vastly changed, and he was no longer in need of a protector to shelter him from those who might hurt him, his mind and spirit were the same as ever. Bucky therefore took it upon himself to watch his friend's back.

Bucky was an invaluable member of Cap's team, known as the Howling Commandos, and more than that he was a steadfast friend. Even in the darkest times, he could bring a smile to Cap's face, and it was he who offered Cap comfort and consolation when the allied dragons and Beastclans suffered heavy losses. His faith in Cap was at the core of the group, and was unshakeable.

Then, in one of the battles, Bucky fell.

He was taken prisoner by none other than the Red Skull: the giant, mutated Hydra Scorpion who led the Shade's forces. His injuries were severe, and for a time it seemed as if he might not survive. However, the skills of Zola - a Black Iron Creeper and the Red Skull's lead scientist - somehow kept him alive. He lost an arm in the process, but Zola replicated the lost limb in metal, fusing it to Bucky's flesh and nerves in a painful transplantation that seemed to last for hours. Yet even after that the Shade's agents were not done with him: they began to experiment as soon as he was stable, exposing him to higher and higher concentrations of the Shade until, finally, they achieved their aim.

Bucky became Shadetouched, infected by the very substance he had sworn to fight.

RED SKULL

ZOLA

The Shade clouded his mind, making him susceptible to the Red Skull and Zola and unable to resist their commands. They put him in a mask that almost completely covered his face, and sent him out onto the field of battle as a living weapon. He rapidly earned a new name: the Winter Soldier.

For months, the Winter Soldier carried out the Red Skull's orders. Zola continued to expose him to the Shade after each mission, keeping him subservient and unable to break free from their control.

The Winter Soldier fought the Howling Commandos many times - as dispassionately and effectively as any other opponents. Each time he left behind a trail of destruction, injuries and death, and it was only Cap's luck that kept him alive ...
