Maela was born an only child in a very small group of mages in the wind clan. In the group, laying one egg was considered shameful, so her parents lost a lot of respect. This stress led to her father's decision to leave to serve the Windsinger, leaving her mother extremely distraught. After Maela hatched, her mother was disappointed to learn Maela did not possess the strong attributes of a mage, and on top of that, was black, which was regarded as a bad omen among all coatls. This made the clan lose even more respect for her mother, and she took her pain out on Maela- the one memoriam of her father. Her mother took the young hatchling far away from the group, abandoning her on the edge of wind territory. Maela, a young coatl, flew helplessly away from the territory over a large ocean, confused and terrified. After hours of flying, the coatl began dropping, and passed out, landing into the freezing waters of ice territory. Her feathery wings kept her afloat through the waters for the moment she was out. When she came to, she quickly attempted to fly out, however her saturated wings were too heavy to fly. She splashed helplessly, the cold waters would freeze the coatl in minutes. Okeanus, a young coatl learning how to fish at the time, spotted the splashing waters and mistook them as food. He flew towards the commotion, but to his dismay, spotted the drowning hatchling. Quickly, he brought Maela to Aures, who used ice sorcery to extract the salt crystals from Maela, easing her recovery. Word was sent to Obsidian, who welcomed the young into the clan, where her unique sense of smell was valued.
Maela is a quirky, free-spirited coatl. Although she doesn't speak to many of her clansmates, they appreciate and respect her duties to the clan. Maela lives with Okeanus and Kauri, her two close friends who appreciate her unique personality. The three bonded over all being born in a different group, rejected, and left to fend for themselves. This past has made Maela very skeptical of who she can trust, and thus, being antisocial to her clan.
She loves spending her time exploring the woods, and sometimes leaves for weeks on end gathering exotic foods all over ice territory as a celebratory treat for special events. Although the job may seem very straightforward, it takes a tactile and educated dragon to gather plants and insects, as many have short lifespans once gathered. In order to prevent food going bad, she must make food runs often and find a good location to hide gathered foods from other creatures and keep them frozen. Maela's sense of smell is also a big help to her, as she is able to identify foods more easily and sense which are poisonous. Food sources like plants and insects are hard to come by in winter terrain, so the majority of plants and insects that do live here are hardy, but tasteless. Although most ice clans are welcoming to each other, some dragon clans are bound to be ruthless and attack if she is found withing their territories. To prevent this, Maela gathers in dense forests and sneaks through territories to find the more edible and tasty foods.
