Biography

HexEater
"Bad Luck Magnet"
Kind | Self-reliant | Cautious | Stoic
HexEater has had bad luck follow him around from the egg. He was born completely white from his eyes and tongue to his coat and plumage. His parents, both on the pale spectrum of the color wheel as well, were very supportive of him and optimistically named him Felix. However unsettling...events...were always happening around him. As a hatchling it wasn't so bad. Food he gathered would spoil faster, jewelry tarnished, apparel ripped, and the like. Yet as he grew older it got worse, as clan members he spent time with were constantly catching colds, familiars of his would run off, and particularly bad weather always seemed to be camped above the lair. Of course Felix had the brunt of it, always sickly, always injured. His clan did their best to stand by him, though there were always whispers from neighbors and passing coatl. They called him Hex in hushed undertones and avoided dealing with him. The last straw however was when a death seeker started to follow him around. Felix was terrified that this was a sign that his luck was finally going to kill someone. He left without a word to his clan, believing that they were better off thinking he had died while foraging.

He traveled northwest along the ice floes avoiding anyone he saw, his familiar the only companionship he allowed. Though lonely he resigned himself to a fate of cursed hermitage. How could he live in a lair if it would just fall to ruins around him? How could he join a clan knowing that he would cause them undue misfortune? How could he take a mate when his proximity caused illness and harm? How could he have hatchlings when there was a possibility they could share in his fate? The coatl cast off his birth name and embraced the one that fate had seen fit to give him, Hex. He wandered, his solitude complete. This abruptly changed when Kismet found him.

He had just crossed into the Starfall Isles when a green guardian hailed him. He disappeared into the forest with out returning her call thinking, from past experiences, that she would not follow. This was not the case, as she spent the better part of the next month trying to meet him. Though he avoided her for as long as he was able, she eventually caught up to him. He did his best to get her to leave, telling her his name was Hex and a hex he was to all who met him. He pointed out that the death seeker who followed him did so of in spite of his many attempts to ward it off. She still did not leave, laughed at the very idea of it. He was her charge and she must protect him. So it was that Hex had a new companion. At first he refused to acknowledge her presence, hoping that by pretending she wasn't there the strange curse that followed him would ignore her as well. Alas this was not to be. Kismet did her best to interact with him. Telling jokes and stories to draw him out as they traveled the wild country side, driving the fish towards him when they hunted the streams, caring for his familiar as they rested at the end of the day. Even though misfortune still circled the coatl, the guardian was able to shield him from it. Try as he might Hex could not help but warm to her presence and after a few weeks even stopped trying lose her. After six months he stopped waiting for the other shoe to drop. It was at this point that disaster, as it inevitably does for Hex, struck.

The pair stumbled upon a scouting party of Talonok. Kismet, true to her guardian nature, managed to keep Hex completely safe while driving away the beast clan. She badly injured herself in the process however and needed immediate medical attention, lest her wounds turn fatal. Hex franticly searched for a nearby clan and came across some Zenith Star members. More specifically StarBorn, ForestFeather and BriarClaw, the trio seemingly waiting at the edge of their land for him. He led them to Kismet were the skydancer and spiral started to tend to her wounds. To distract the coatl while this was going on, StarBorn told the younger dragon how her clan seer, Scripts, had seen their trouble. She then extended an offer for the both of them to join her clan. At first Hex declined as he was positive that he was a danger to everyone at this point. How could he in good conscious put innocents in harm’s way merely for his own comfort? He was already planning to leave Kismet with the clan while she healed and travel to the Observatory to ask the Arcanist to take him into His fold. A god, he reasoned, would be able to handle his hexes. StarBorn pointed out that while this was admirable, the great mage had already ended the world two times and anything that could influence a third was best kept away. She instead offered her own magical prowess to his aid. Faced with this logic and the promise of help, the troubled coatl agreed and even then only on a trial basis. The new clan members were then brought to the lair.

Thankfully while Kismet recovered, StarBorn and Illusion were able to discover that while Hex did indeed attract bad luck he did not generally pose a mortal threat to others. Rather he is like a lode stone for all the bad luck in the area. In addition, when there is a dragon or item that has been purposely cursed if he should go near it he absorbs the curse naturally, dispersing it out as smaller misfortune. With this new insight the coatl renamed himself for the last time as HexEater. To help counter act the effects of the negative energy StarBorn devised a spell that would theoretically work by counterbalancing the bad luck with good to create a neutral field. All that was needed was something to anchor the spell, as it could not be directly cast upon HexEater. The pair went to the Auction House to find something suitable. HexEater proposed a simple lapis pendant, but StarBorn caught him stealing glances at a unicorn guise. She realized that as an all white coatl, the young dragon would probably love to wear the cloak adorned with a multitude of intense clashing colors. She decided a little splurging of clan treasure was worth properly welcoming the new addition. With his new attire, the coatl became a valuable member of Zenith Star, attracting and nullifying the majority of the clans bad luck.

As Kismet got better HexEater would visit her often, getting to know her now that he had no fear of harming her. She continues to be an excellent guardian for him and is trying to convince him to reach out to his family so that they know he is alive and well. While HexEater is resistant to the idea, it would be nice to see his family again one day, tell them he's not a monster. That and he has a huge crush on Kismet, so he might do it to make her happy.
