about. Francis is friendly to everyone, charming (if overly prone to sarcasm), and extremely gentle with any dragon or creature smaller than he is. Obviously the bulk of his protective instincts are directed toward Taeven, his charge, but he can often be found playing with hatchlings, accompanying clanmates on dangerous expeditions, or nursing an injured beast back to health. His familiar, a fox named Azalea, is one such creature who refused to leave his side after she was well again. He forms attachments quickly and easily, and he's very open about those feelings. He'll offer help and support to anyone who needs it, without worrying about what they owe him afterward - he just likes to make people happy. He's also remarkably sensitive, easily hurt by rejection or cruel comments, and not particularly good at hiding that either. There's a reason he doesn't get along with the cold, prickly Marburg, who finds his natural friendliness excessive, offputting, and a little suspicious. Francis doesn't seem to take many things seriously, least of all himself. Taking things seriously makes him uncomfortable, while if everything is a joke or a game, he doesn't have to think about it too much. He's not dumb, just maybe a bit naive, and prone to anxiety if things get too complicated. While responsibility scares him, he does have a strong sense of what's right and what's wrong, and isn't afraid to dig in his heels on that point, even if it means arguing with his friends... and anyone threatening Taeven, his clan, or anyone else who seems defenseless will quickly find out just how serious he can be. |

history.
Francis was born in a small traveling circus, and wandered Sornieth with his strange eclectic family as he grew up. He took on a few different jobs there - training beasts and taking care of beasts, setting up and tearing down the tents, providing muscle when patrons got a little rowdy - but as much as he loved his tribe, he never quite found his place there. And then, as the circus was skirting the edge of the Scarred Wasteland, he met another guardian named Jael, fell immediately in love with her, and left his family to be with her.
Life with the circus hadn't been easy, but life in the plaguelands was another manner altogether. Many members of his new family were fierce and cruel in ways that baffled him, but all of them were survivors, and that much, at least, was familiar. He thought he was strong before, but here he really learned to fight; his scales toughened, becoming hard and polished, and slowly he collected pale scars, reminders of how he had defended his clan over the years. He and Jael raised many hatchlings - Francis adored and doted on every one, even sending a couple back to his birth clan. He got used to that life, surviving in a place full of illness and death... and, somehow, he was happy. Then Taeven arrived, and everything changed.
The moment Francis saw the little wandering fae, he knew he had to protect her. He'd almost given up on finding a charge of his own, it had been so long, and he was content with that... but then there she was, and suddenly the center of his world shifted from Jael to Taeven. For a while, she stayed with the plague clan, and he was able to hang on to the life he had built there, but eventually she had to move on, and he couldn't let her go without him. As a fellow guardian, Jael understood completely - her obligations were in the plaguelands, and so they parted ways. Francis vowed never to fall in love with another guardian again, unwilling to risk that he might lose another mate to conflicting duties.
He spent many more years wandering the land along with Taeven (and with her partner, Marburg), until the death of Taeven's father led them back to Firnhold, where she was raised. There, they finally put down roots again, and as they slowly gathered a sort of accidental clan around them, Francis decided his job was to defend not just Taeven, but the hoard she had inherited and the dragons who had chosen to follow her. Anyone who wishes Firnhold ill will have to come through him.
