Ash is Tephron's adopted son and a devoted follower of the Flamecaller. Although he was born in the Sunbeam Ruins, as Ash sees it, even the sun can not survive without flames. Thus, fire is to be greatly respected. As a hatchling, Ash was cast out by his parents, who feared he was an omen of bad luck due to his darkly colored feathers. However, Tephron sees Ash's coloration differently and believes him to be "touched by flame" and therefore blessed by the Flamecaller himself. Since Tephron was his main caregiver, Ash and his 'father' are very close and can usually be found chanting and dancing around the fires they build. Unfortunately, unlike Tephron, Ash can be very temperamental and often snaps at other dragons--literally and figuratively. His bad attitude stems from his fear of abandonment and rejection, which leads him to distance himself from other dragons or hurt them before they have a chance to hurt him. He does, however, have a deep affection for him familiar, Sparky.
