Biography

Vane
Ice Flight - "Land-Bound" Pirate

Young Vane quite happily grew older in the Southern Icefields where he was born, but always did have a bit of curiosity towards the nearby Ashfall Wastes. After all, he had clanmates who were from those lands, and had told of much treasure and precious gems to be found there. It sounded perfect for a dragon interested in plundering and piracy.

But as he asked his parents about it-- also pirates-- they said the Ashfall Wastes, despite it bordering much water, was too land-locked for any true pirate to focus on.

"You should just target any supply ships in the open waters near the Icefields! Or heck, settle in Water Flight! Anywhere but Fire for an Ice drake!"

All the same, when the young Spiral did depart, he did beeline towards an area known as the Molten Scar in the fire territories. He thought he would definitely succeed where others failed, a bit of arrogance surely, but as he found himself in the region... he promptly collapsed from heat exhaustion and singed wings.

A nearby clan took him in, and thankfully had but a few Ice and Water drakes to aid in restoring him to his former self. At first they did not take too kindly to the thieving behaviour that led Vane there, but offered to at the least give him a place to return to since his wings had been badly singed upon his arrival to the Fire realms. Hot steam and updrafts could be fun to play with for dragons aware of the heat-- but for a dragon used to the cold, it was not a suitable mix. His ambition cooled slightly, and thought perhaps he would have to rethink things now that he was within the framework of a clan again. Indeed-- his goals could be more particular in terms of piracy in such a battle-torn region...

Despite the care given to him by this strange clan, it soon became apparent that his damaged wings were worse than first assumed.

"You may be able to fly again, but never as fast or for as long as what is common for your breed," they told him with the blank expression of someone who had seen such injuries far too many times.

It was a tragedy, really. A spiral without its wings is nothing. The thought of never being able to loop through the air, or to dive and play among the clouds, caught Vane in a depressive state. He would not eat, would not talk. There were several times where the other clan members had to loosen his body from a self-inflicted knot, as Vane himself couldn't bother to care for his body any more. Pitying him, the other dragons allowed the spiral time to wallow in his sorrow.

That was, until one day Vane looked up and found the wildclaw Curie above him.

Her face was grotesque, jaw locked in a permanent grin where the skin on her muzzle had been ripped off. Her wings were torn to shreds and body laden with scars, as if her body had rotted away before suddenly realizing she was still alive. Veils of silk hung around her wrists, hips and tail. There was also a veil of silk over her face, not covering her scar as much as bringing focus too her glittering green nature eyes. She looked down at him, and cackled.

Intrigued by this mad dragon who stood above him and laughed, Vane rose from his position of being spawned over the warm floor. Coiling his lower body allowed him the stability needed to rise up and meet the wildclaw's eyes. She grinned at him, not just the involuntary grin the torn up skin around her jaw created, but a grin which reached her amused eyes.

"Oh look, yer awake! Me thought ye would have t' wait longer. Yer a pirate, aye? Me've heard that ye pirates know how t' smuggle, aye?" Her voice was a hoarse whisper, as if several of her vocal chords had been severed. Still, Vane nodded slowly, curious as what the wildclaw wanted of him.

"Great! Now, listen up boy. I need yer help t' sell somethin. 'tis a little quest'nable but no worries, it'll be fine! Here are yer instructions, find me when yer done."

With that she handed him a sealed scroll, and went off, leaving Vane to confusingly stare at what would be the beginning of a career as mercenary within the clan. As soon as one task was finished, another was given by Curie, before suddenly he had customers all over the clan wanting him to sell and buy questionable goods for them. Not knowing if it was intentional or not, Vane realized that Curie had given him a new chance to embrace life. He may never be a pirate, but every pirate needs a smuggler.

Through his mercenary ways, Vane also stumbled upon The Greedy Mantarune - a former pirate ship now nearly landlocked thanks to a diminishing crew. As much as he'd love the opportunity to convince the rest of the crew members to go pirating again, loyalty to Bottochelli instead made him strike a deal with the ship. Help the clan send and receive goods, and the clan would pay well in both treasure and crewmembers.

By know, Vane is a recognized clan member as well as part of the ships crew. By daytime, he runs errands all over the clan and between The Greedy Mantarune, as fast as his stunted legs can carry him, whilst by night his 'not-so-secret-secret-job' is carried out. It isn't the life Vane had thought he would have, but it is a good life. Curie remains his closest friend, as he find her quite endearing.

Some still find the Spiral suspicious in his new clan however. His eyes seem piercing to many.
