Shadebound | Royal Pearlcatcher
Hatchday Nov 26, 2013 | 7-digit ID #1443039

Looks like this sinister plagueling wandered a little too far from his home lair (razrroth #15990), and now he's off to see the world! If you ever feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off to See the World' thread. If you don't want another traveler in return, you can also drop him off at the Traveling Dragon Rest Hub!

His father, Nightsong, will stay in his home lair forever, as will his grandmother, Lavender (both Spirals). So he will always have a home to return to. Good luck, my little plagueling~

Stories and Travels | Backstory and Items
Shadebound takes after his father's triple-Royal coloring, but was nested in Plague-infested territory which tainted his elemental alliance. For years he attempted to find his place in the friendly Ash Haven encampment, but always found he was drawn to the ideals of Plague and strength in testing his limits. He's collecting spells and abilities as he travels to hone his repertoire, and fights any strong dragon he deems worthy enough, although he may not always win.

Sinister Intentions • Serious • Untrustworthy • Soft Spot for Spirals

Travels with two items:
Plague Tome Miasma Crystal
*The Miasma Crystal is his pearl, should he change breeds

He does not currently have a familiar. Feel free to give him one!

He has no gene plan and could do with a makeover or ideas for when he returns!
Started as Pearlcatcher - Tiger/Eye Spots/Basic

Stories and Travels | The Sunbeam Lanternhouse
Shadebound heard rumors of some sort of esoteric library - a promising place to begin honing his repertoire - which lead him to the Sunbeam Lanternhouse. He interviewed Kukulcan about the rumors he had heard; the Coatl, much surprised, introduced him to Vianne. The Guardian, in turn, didn't seem to buy his story that he was researching the history of conflict between Nature and Plague. But neither did she bar him access to the Vault, home of the Sunbeam Lanternhouse's sprawling library. She informed him that the Vault made many dragons uncomfortable, that its corridors were full of strange noises and weird shadows, and that she would always be nearby if he wanted to leave, which he was free to do at any time.

He was not going to be chased away so easily; a test of his mental fortitude would be ideal.

While Vianne did not outright interfere in his ostentatiously declared research, neither was she eager to help, and he was hampered by his need to keep his actual search for survivable spells surreptitious. Thus it ended up somewhat haphazard, and he came up empty.

Vianne was not impressed.

He got the feeling she knew exactly what he was looking for.

He decided to try a different tack, and asked for a break from the Vault. Vianne didn't seem surprised by the request, and directed him to the sunny Meadow. After the gloom of the Vault, it was an assault to his eyes... but, he had to admit, the peace it offered was welcome. He hadn't realized quite how badly the unintelligible whispering, just at the limits of his hearing, occasionally punctuated by an unexpected creak, had disconcerted him until it was replaced by the normal sounds of birdsong and wind through trees.

He wasn't sure he liked the implications of that.

He got to ponder them for a few days - and plan his next move - before he was approached by The Twins, who told him in no uncertain terms that he was going to join them in the Coliseum.

He didn't want to fight with them, but neither was he going to refuse their command. He had a sense of self-preservation, after all.

They got him to Level 10, then turned him out of the Lanternhouse.

He was sure Vianne had put them up to it.

Stories and Travels | Nature's Hospitality
There was something familiar about the Diamond Rooks Sanctuary, but he couldn't quite place it. There was a mix of all types of dragons in this clan with roles ranging from dark magic to gardening to cooking. He was taken to the guest lodging where Dax, an overly friendly guardian, greeted him, had him sign the guestbook, and then showed him to his quarters. Shade then took the dragon up on his offer to tour the settlement which turned out to be somewhat useful as they ran into the sanctuary's head alchemist - or so he thought she would be useful.

"Hm, I might know of some spells," Fala hissed as she sized him up, "but quite frankly, I don't like your look."

Dax took this awkward opportunity to vacate the area and leave the two alone. He wasn't one for any sort of confrontation. Shade was less than enthused by the entire ordeal, but tried his best to feign innocence, "My look? How can I change how I look?"

"I won't help you," she waved at him in a disregarding fashion, "and I suspect none of the residents here will. The dragons here are peaceful and will not tolerate any plagueling bravado. Seek out our library if you wish to go through some of our tomes, though don't expect much in the way of spells over there either."

And with that, she disappeared into her den without giving him so much as a chance to fight her for the knowledge. It was probably better that way anyway. He did sift through the library for a few days (to no avail), dabbled in random banter with various locals, attended an evening storyteller circle, and enjoyed quite a delicious array of foods.

Fala, oddly, showed up on his last day to send him off. She had plucked a wilting indigo mimosa, its petals crisp and faded to a deep brown as it neared its end of life. She cupped it gently while handing it to him, an almost sad expression upon her face.

"An old... acquaintance of mine is from Rotrock Rim," there was hesitation in her voice and a discomfort in the way she shifted about. "He used to tell me that the jungle reminded him of home. With as much life as is here, there is often much rot that follows."

That is exactly what it was. All around him in the bountiful jungle, plants struggled to stay alive. He peered down at the withered flower curiously and then plucked off one of its petals, examining it closely before allowing it to fall to the ground. There was harmony among nature's territory, but there was an all too familiar chaos underneath: a constant struggle, a fight for survival.

"Thank you," his voice was more quiet than he had anticipated, his focus lingering on the wilted bud.

"Mm," she collected herself, then touched her chest while respectfully bowing her head, "Good luck with your journey, pearlcatcher. I hope your next adventure takes you to a clan more suited for what you desire."

Stories and Travels | Shifting Wing Caravan
After leaving the Nature domain, Shadebound found himself face-to-face with the Shifting Expanse's unforgiving desert. Plague dragons have mixed feelings of Lightning dragons: while their homeland is harsh and could encourage the same sort of survival instincts plaguelings pride themselves on, the children of Stormcatcher tend to use their technological creations to make their lives more comfortable, completely circumventing the opportunity. However, this was no matter, as he could always spend his own time testing his body and mind in the brutal storms of sand and lightning. It always looked like night in the desert, with thick clouds covering the sky at all times.

Shade had heard rumors of a mage in a caravan clan within the desert, which is what actually led him here. The powerful shadowmage has protected the wandering clan since its inception, and he managed to track them down with relative ease; the caravan lingered only a few miles from the border of Lightning's territory after a recent battle with Wind, picking up dragons who had become lost in the storms of war.

Getting into the caravan, he found, was much harder.

For a Lightning clan, they seemed to lean heavily on Arcane protections (odd, given the rivalries between the two flights, though not nearly as strong as that between Plague and Nature.) The caravan was shielded with a dome of Arcane magic. Entering the dome was done at certain doorways, constructed with Lightning-built magical devices to interrupt the Arcane dome, which were guarded. All he had to do was declare his name, his reasons for entering, and he would granted entry; but as soon as he did--

The two guards crossed their weapons before the door, blocking his entry, and declared "Shadebound?! No shade-touched dragons are allowed to enter!"

Shade could attempt to talk away the problem. He could attempt to smooth everything over, tell them "It's a misunderstanding, my name isn't literal," without making a challenge of it, or simply ask to see the shadowmage before taking his leave. But the moment he saw the two snappers reach for their weapons, he knew he could take them both on - they did look intimidating, but they were clearly very new to their posts, and Shade was no amateur. His spellbook instantly flying to his claws, he barely even glanced at it as he recited an incantation of rot - a minor spell that would not pose long-lasting affects on them - and, as he expected, he watched the guards drop their weapons and reel back in horror as their hard hides softened in decay, revolting against them.

In his excitement to demonstrate his strength, he had not realized that dragons on the other side of the pink, semi-transparent dome had noticed him, and had moved from curious, to concerned, to panicked. This caravan, after all, had a reputation for sheltering the weak from the desert storms, and now appeared to be under attack just as the guards had yelled out "Shadebound!" Caravanees began crying out "Winter! Winter!" and, in response, a protector emerged from the dome's door: a skydancer, of whom shadow dripped off like mist from dry ice.

This was the shadowmage Shade had heard so much about! Now was his chance, to pick her brain for magical knowledge and, if she refused, he would challenge her to a duel--

But he found himself suddenly alone as shadows swarmed out from the skydancer, encasing him in pure silence and darkness. He couldn't hear his own voice as he called out to her, but slowly, the sounds around him grew: the echoing of a heartbeat scratching on ice - a cold, wicked, feminine laugh - another feminine voice, speaking low in a language he had never heard - whispers not unlike what he heard in the Sunbeam Lanternhouse's library, but surely they were not the same ones?

As Shade tried to claw his way out of the darkness, gasping, unable to breathe, he found himself released as sharply as he had been subdued. He fell, fell, fell into a rocky plateau from what felt like a great distance, though his wings refused to catch air. He was back at the entrance of the desert, alone, the caravan miles away. The Sea of a Thousand Currents churned nearby, somehow ignorant of what he had just seen.

Shade picked himself out of the loose rocks and sand, took some calming breaths, dusted himself off, and set out on his next lead - his experience not leaving his thoughts as he traveled.
