Biography
The light at the end of the Shadow.
Travellers lost in the Tangled Wood sometimes speak of strange lights guiding them through the mists. In the case of Shade and his entourage, this aid takes a more hands-on approach: for a small fee (as per trickster tradition), the small group leads dragons (and on occasion Beastclans) through the darkness and to their destination, or back to Umbersurge Coven's lair to barter and rest. Although those he deems of dubious moral integrity or a danger to the clan may just as likely find themselves stranded in the middle of a murky bog... Taking after his foster parent in true Nocturne fashion, Shadestalker has a flair for the dramatic and will ensure that any chance encounter with him is one to be remembered. Bio: Growing up, Shadestalker was told by his adoptive parent, Spadille, that his shadowy tones were special, a gift from the Night Mother herself. And that his birth clan, knowing he would be destined for great things, had, albeit with a heavy heart, sent him to Umbersurge Coven to find his true calling among the Shadows. The older he grew, the more unlikely he found the tale, but those he asked always changed the subject or avoided his gaze. This left the teenager feeling frustrated, and eventually, he confronted the clan Matriarch. Everyone had always told him he was special, different, but all that had ever done was make him feel like an outsider: not a Plague dragon, but not part of the clan, either - always feeling like everyone else was privy to a secret he had missed out on. The Matriarch listened to the outburst, strangely silent. Then, once he had finished, she looked him up and down measuringly, then took him aside and told him the truth. A hunting party had found him, a tiny hatchling barely a few hours old, abandoned at the edge of the Tangled Wood. In all likelyhood, it had been his very colours that had made the clan see him as an ill omen to be rid of. The answer was honest, and with no sugar-coating, and strangely liberating. Better to be an outcast and know it, he thought. But she hadn't finished. He was an outcast, yes, but so were all those around him. So was she: she had founded Umbersurge Coven as a haven for those unjustly shunned anywhere else. The strange, the cursed, the pariahs. His colours were seen as a blessing among worshippers of the Shadowbinder, but it was not why they had taken him in. And it was his own worth, not his colours, that made him special. Spadille later apologised, and offered him a set of body paints he had employed heavily in his days as a Circus Mage. Shade has made good use of them since: not just to hide his looks (although, if pressed, he will admit he is still self-conscious about his appearance), but as a reminder that he can choose to be whoever he wants. |
