COFRESI
Third Mate

WILFULDEDICATEDRESILIENT

Cofresi is the Third Mate of the pirate fleet, meaning he is the fourth in the chain of command. It is a respectable position he earned by his own merit. Someone with an ill tongue might whisper his love for Sayyida, the captain and the queen of the crew played in his favor, but Sayyida would have such tongue cut for such insolent and crass words. She doesn't play favorites. Cofresi is more than aware of this. His journey to his respected position was long and full of hardships.

Cofresi did not start his life as a ridgeback. Ironically enough for a dragon his size, when he cracked his shell of the magic-infused egg he had came to be, floating in an arcane nest, he was a mere, scrawny fae all skin and bones. Arcane was in his blood. Being the favored breed of dragons his deity, the Arcanist, had created, he should have been thankful for what he had.

But he never was.

Cofresi was a skilled mage, but terrible at surviving on his own. The world can be a cruel place when you are an outlier ten times smaller than everyone and everything else. Still against all odds he did manage to travel across Sornieth, wandering aimlessly across lands, trying to find some purpose for his life. His blood pulled him always to the seas, no matter what. He had been born in islands and so deep inland felt sometimes almost suffocating. A sea was something that rivaled everyone in grandness and size, not just him. It was comforting in its own way.

By the time the scrawny fae made his way across the continent and to the Sunbeam Ruins he jumped from port to port, too restless to stay in one place for a long time.
Until he made it to the home port of Queen's Revenge.
It didn't take Cofresi long to overcome any suspicions for a strange newcomer and he was granted stay for a short while, making his way around the docks and the black market, not really shaken by anything he saw. In his travels he had seen all sorts of things and one piracy operation would not cause heart palpations for a tiny mage. Few days passed and he was ready to leave, too restless to stay still for long, but he caught news that the clan's fleet was arriving within the same day. It was just the same to wait for a little longer and see what the fuss was about, so Cofresi waited along the rest for the fleet to arrive. He was not disappointed. The rolling waves and the enormous ships arriving gracefully to the ports through narrow, perilous passes was a sight themselves, and the moment the ropes were tossed down to the dragons waiting at the docks, the bright blue, glimmering serpent took flight from the deck of the flagship.

It was then when his heart was stolen away.

hmm, from Sayyida's profile:

"Before him she used to bed whoever she fancied on shore leaves - she has a strict rule against "distracting mingling" on board - and a poor little fae happened to be one of her bed fellows several times. Eventually she got used to seeing him waiting for her flagship to arrive ashore, and out of pity or affection she always granted him a night or two of her time. She didn't admit it to herself, but over time she grew fond of the eager, defiant fae called Cofresi, but despite that she always denied him access to her fleet. She judged him too fragile and too small to be actually anything else but a burden offshore. It wasn't until her ship rode the gently rolling waves to the harbor in the wake of a cold spring morning when she saw a great ridgeback male waiting in the docks and her heart skipped a beat. She had a sense of familiarity when she eyed with a calculating glance the dragon waiting for her fleet, and for a reason she couldn't name Sayyida felt helplessly thrilled. She couldn't really concentrate on handling the docking procedures she often oversaw, and eventually left her brother to handle the situation as she flew ashore, a beautifully glimmering blue serpent in the morning sun. As the two of them met, their eyes locked together, the ridgeback greeted her with four very familiar words: "Calm waters, my queen?" to which Sayyida replied without breath, "Waters are strange and the currents unknown, but for now I am safe." It had been her and her lover's greeting for years, and she knew the dragon in front of her was Cofresi. He had grown too restless to wait ashore for the love of his life, and had embarked on a long journey full of hardships to become worthy of his queen. Cofresi had saved his treasures to see an enchanter who gave him the gift of changing his appearance to a much more magnificent breed, and he chose to become a ridgeback. But he had not stopped with his physiology. After getting used to being ten sizes what he used to be, he spent months and months at seas, serving under different captains to learn the ropes of seafare. Cofresi had done everything he could and more so that Sayyida would finally let him enlist into her fleet, and as usually so witty spiral was now speechless, he took her with him to spend the night. Ever since the two of them have had a passionate, fiery and fond relationship, and the ridgeback serves on Sayyida's flagship. The pirate queen usually wears only jewelry she has looted herself, but the citrine ring on her right arm's claw is a token of affection from her lover."
