Biography
Gale's Thoughts: Gemma
Sometimes I forget how old Gemma really is.
As one of only a handful of mirrors who came into the clan as an outsider, Gemma is of note because she was with a much larger clan before she came to us. And even stranger, she came to us as a hatchling, her gangly body not having quite yet reached the self-conscious awkwardness of adolescence. She was caught in the prime of youth and not willing to stay with a clan as peaceful and settled as her old one was.
So when she saw us, small and often literally fighting our way through the day in the early months of Chiaroscuro's existence, she was more than content to stay for a while. And then that while turned into a whole life.
She had a mate for a very long time; Altair was about as stereotypical a mirror as one can find in Sornieth, and they got along swimmingly. I wasn't too fond of him myself, but they were good for each other and I wasn't about to stand in the way of that. When Altair passed away after a large clan battle that is avoided in conversation to this day, something changed in Gemma.
She became a travelling mercenary rather than one of the clan's guards, and was often away from Chiaroscuro for long periods of time. She also hired herself out as a bodyguard after mercenary work got too demanding, and was gone for even longer stretches.
Then, one day she came home (it had been almost two years, we'd expanded and moved the clan to where we live now; I still don't know if she found the message we left for her or if she just followed whatever trail we'd left behind), latest client in tow, and settled into the outreaches of the clan's borders in a small underground den without saying a word to anyone.
After we sent her client on his way with food and a personal escort to the Viridian Labyrinth, I finally went to talk to Gemma. I sat outside her den for three days before she hauled herself outside, and I was shocked at how different she seemed from who I'd known even before she left. She was worn-down and shaky, an old warrior finally giving herself a moment to rest.
And then I remembered that even though she's younger than me, Gemma is still older than most mirrors live to be. We're a savage species, and not terribly long-lived when it comes to the various dragon species as a whole. Four hundred and fifty to five hundred years is standard for the species if we don't get killed early on; six hundred years is really pushing it, and getting to even a third of that age is cause for celebration. So for Gemma and I to be over three hundred is astounding in and of itself.
And for Gemma to have spent much of her time travelling and fighting alone, often wracked with grief? She deserves a quiet retirement as far as I'm concerned. I know she'll never tell me everything she did, but I don't really need to know.
And if her visits to the nightly clan bonfires become more frequent than once or twice a week, then maybe I'll hear some of the stories she does want to tell.
