Biography
Gale's Thoughts: Impulse
Impulse is one of my oldest friends, if you can call our long, tumultuous history "friendship."
I've known Impulse longer than anyone else in Clan Chiaroscuro, even Keiro. Back when I was out on my own, before I had any friends or family to speak of, Impulse was about the only dragon I honestly felt like I knew. I met him as an "apprentice" for one of the traveling weapons dealers in the Promenade (looking back now, it was clear that what Impulse was really being subjected to was more akin to slavery than anything else, forced to do all the dirty work while being punished severely for even the slightest wrongdoing), and was immediately impressed with his intellect. While it was clear he was rather uncomfortable in his surroundings, even lamenting to me once that he desperately missed the Sea of a Thousand Currents, he could tell me anything and everything about anyone else who had set up shop near his master's little stand.
For a few months after that, I saw him nearly every week when I ventured into the city for supplies, and eventually he snuck away and accompanied me more than he stayed with his master. One day, he asked if he could see where I lived (it was barely more than a hole in the ground at the time), and I accepted, having found myself enjoying his strange brand of company.
When I woke up the day after Impulse's visit, almost all of my money had been stolen, and when I stormed off to the Promenade to confront him, I found a very angry arms dealer raving about "that rotten little thief" having pilfered all of his income from their stay, and "see if he ever hired a servant from them again." While I was still rather angry myself, I comforted myself with knowing that maybe he'd stolen enough money to get himself home.
I didn't see him again until Chiaroscuro was in its early stages of development, still just a small group of dragons trying to make something of themselves in a cliff face. He showed up in the middle of the night, and I was the last one awake. I barely recognized him at first, whatever challenges the world had thrown at him clearly having aged him, but when I figured it out, the initial conversation did not go very well. After my leftover frustrations and hurt and even concern for him had been aired, all he did was grin wickedly at me and say:
"So do you think you could get some use out of an information broker?"
Finally allowed to be himself, Impulse revealed himself to be an incredible asset, an arrogant jerk, blunt to the point of having no tact, and stupidly loyal. He and I have had more than one disagreement over the many, many years we've known each other, and even the most powerful of the clan steer clear whenever we're really going at it. Sometimes it's weeks or months before we're on even footing again.
But he's been there for me too. He's one of the few dragons in the clan I can vent all of my frustrations to without fear of judgement or false platitudes. If someone in the clan is really in danger, he'll give me any and all information he can. And sometimes, I fear he's done more behind the scenes for me than I can even fathom. He told me once that if he revealed all of his secrets to me, I would never forgive him.
"And I'm not willing to push my luck. You already forgive me too often."
So, yeah. Friends. Kind of. Maybe. All I know is that we're not enemies, and thank the gods for that, because if we were we would absolutely ruin each other.
