Emerald

Emerald lived most of his long life in the Shifting Expanse, a far cry from the lush jungles of his youth. He liked the dry climate, and he enjoyed the challenge of coaxing life out of the hard, sandy soil, but he never liked the cold desert nights. The dramatic storms were exciting, but sometimes he missed the gentle rains and mild seasons of the Viridian Labyrinth. Never enough to go back; just enough to complain about it, especially as he grew older. Maybe he complained too much. Maybe that was why none of his mates ever stuck around. Or maybe it was something else. Maybe a farmer was a boring choice for a mate, when there were engineers, and warriors, and mages who could summon lightning strikes on a whim. He's not sure, but he knows he's not happy with the dragon he turned out to be, so why would any of his mates feel different? He's an old dragon, but maybe it's not too late to change.
