Baalberith is the clan's cryptographer, and Matriarch's right hand, both positions of great importance. He is prone to riddles, codes, and crypticisms even in his leisure time, which can make him difficult to talk to, but which he refuses to abandon. He likes to say that his mind is a finely-tuned machine, and he has to keep it running otherwise it will rust. He is often cloistered in his office, bent over some code or message, or in private meeting with Jeanne, discussing some important aspect of the clan's running. Nerween has privately voiced the opinion that he could use a bit more fun in his life, since he's too young to be acting like a crotchety old man, and Jeanne occasionally has to rescue Baalberith from his cheerful attempts to liven up the coatl's day. (However, though he would never admit it, he does secretly enjoy the sweets Nerween leaves in his office.) An avid lover of ciphers and riddles, Baalberith has always enjoyed his job as the clan's cryptographer. The unnamed clan deals in plenty of coded missives, from intercepted messages whose contents need to be deciphered, to their own secret communications which mustn't be allowed to fall into the wrong hands. He particularly enjoys instances when he needs to come up with a coded message specifically intended to “accidentally” fall into enemy hands and plant seeds of misinformation. He takes a fiendish joy in coming up with something difficult enough to seem genuine, but not so difficult as to be uncrackable. The one thing he hates most is to be interrupted in the middle of his codebreaking, and he keeps a number of paperweights, not so much to keep his papers in place as to have handy ammunition to fling at anyone unfortunate enough to interrupt him. Even when he's not working, he still enjoys puzzles of all sorts, from word and number puzzles, to those made of interlocked rings or tangled wires. His sharp wit and tendency to look for solutions no matter how many different ways he needs to approach a problem make him invaluable to Jeanne as more than just a cryptographer. Although he acts like a grumpy scholar with no interest in the affairs of other dragons much of the time, that couldn't be farther from the truth. He watches the affairs of the lair, and the dragons within, with more interest than most of them know. He is able to offer a unique take on situations, and displays a particular aptitude for managing schedules, supplies, and conflicting temperaments. In fact, the more different aspects, or the more complicated the situation is, the more pleasure he seems to take in finding a solution. If Jeanne must travel away from the lair, he even has her permission to issue orders in her name as he sees fit, claiming that he received an encrypted message from her containing them to make sure that they will be followed. Baalberith is a little infamous amongst the clan members for a grumpy temperament, and a tendency to speak either in lectures or riddles. Secretly, he hopes that they'll find his riddles as amusing as he finds it to come up with them. In fact, Jeanne endeared herself to him when they first met by playing along, matching him wit for wit, coming up with amusing interpretations when she couldn't crack the code he spoke in. Despite his seemingly antisocial tendencies, he is still at least passingly familiar with nearly everyone in the liar. Because of his tendency to work until he has things completely figured out, he keeps strange hours, and completely inconsistent sleeping and eating habits. This means he's out and about at any time from early morning to late night, and he's crossed paths with almost every dragon, no matter their own preferred schedules, at least once. If any dragon is willing to sit and talk about ciphers or puzzles with him while he eats lunch at 3 AM, they'll find him quite talkative despite his reputation. ~by Mirrorstone |
"A royal puzzle, don't you think? Well, keep trying, you'll figure out. Third time's the charm, you see."
Quote:
(Baalberith's first quote is encoded with a Caesar cipher which, if I did it right, should be solvable by shifting each letter three spaces forward in the alphabet. It's an ancient Sumerian riddle, that reads “There is a house. One enters it blind and comes out seeing. What is it?” and the answer is “a school.” I thought it seemed fitting that he'd hide a puzzle inside a puzzle.)
