Biography
Zelophehad Patriarch Nicknamed Zelo |
Zelophehad grew up a solitary dragon in the Starwood Strand with no knowledge of what he was missing. He fluttered about his days, investigating the phenomena of the Starfall Isles, particularly the fauna. And yet. Something nagged at him during the dark hours of the night, when the stars blazed overhead. He would sit in his nest, taking comfort in the close, hard shell of the cured tree sap that he had spun himself, and look up, and feel… and feel… Something drove him from his birthplace, and he wandered south and east, towards the rocky outskirts of the Starfall Isles. And there, by chance, he met Vianne. He had gotten distracted by a swarm of Mana Thieves – gotten so wrapped up in his investigation of them that he failed to notice her come upon him. She was very guarded with him. Zelophehad, however, intuited a forlornness about her. And so, without any warning whatsoever, he asked her about Pauper Larvae, startling her into their first conversation. By the end of it, he was certain that he was not her Charge, somewhat to his relief, yet he had no intention of leaving her, either. She didn’t object to his company, and so they traveled together through the Crystalspine Reaches. Several weeks later, they had their first clutch together… which resulted in a much more serious conversation than Zelophehad had wished for. He had not realized just how unprepared he was to be a parent, and to his disquiet, Vianne was even less so. The Twins were born in late spring in a rocky, open valley - one without any protection from the elements. It became Zelophehad’s top priority to find a lair for them - which was further complicated shortly thereafter by the discovery of Rhonwen. Yet The Twins found a fast friend in her, and Vianne refused to abandon her. |

So the growing family doggedly continued their quest, until they came upon a hollow spire in the very southernmost reaches of the Starfall Isles. The entrance was a wide fissure facing the rising sun, opening up into a wide, open cavern. The Twins, now mostly grown, refused to let their mother carve a lair into the rock for them; they did it themselves, claiming a space nearly directly across from the entrance. Vianne acquiesced, perhaps because she now had another clutch to watch over (she did not make a lair for herself, simply deeming the main chamber sufficient). It fell to Zelophehad to find food for them. It was on one of these gathering trips that Zelophehad came across Keahi and Q - which prompted another serious conversation with Vianne. She hadn’t considered the fact that settling down in a permanent location would be attractive to other dragons looking for an established home (though, in fairness, Zelophehad hadn’t - not really - either). And so Zelophehad had to do some convincing of his mate, but not as much as he had feared: Keahi was stalwart, and very good with the newborn hatchlings, Sumayya, Ai, and Praxiteles. Though Q’s initial behavior was rather skittish and strange, she - no, Q, who prefers no pronouns - proved invaluable in those early days, hunting for all of them, bringing back generous amounts of meaty provisions. During this hectic time, Porfirio came to the clan, and to Zelo’s surprise, Vianne was very vocal about his staying. He and Keahi worked together to construct a dedicated nursery for the clan. When it was completed, he and Vianne celebrated it with their third nest (Cassandra, Ila, and Schuyler). It was then that Miyako requested to join the clan, and, since it would have made little sense to turn away a physician, Zelophehad welcomed her. Why he allowed Eirwen to join is anyone's guess. (Her birth clan made a "gift" of her.) |
It was also about this time that Aysu and Obrad asked to join the clan, and Thanh drifted in. So it was becoming quite apparent to Zelophehad that their aggregation of individuals was evolving into something more than a simple family unit with some idiosyncratic supporters. When he voiced this to Vianne, however, she insisted that they were not a clan - even as everyone else began to think of them as one, especially as they began to make alliances with other flights' clans. So Zelophehad simply made something up. "Deoradhan-Kunibert" is a compound name: "Deoradhan" means exile or wanderer in Gaelic; "Kunibert" is derived from the Germanic elements "kuni", meaning clan, family and "beraht", meaning bright. Essentially, the clan name means Exile-Wanderer's Bright Clan/Family. Ghislain and Gilbert ended their travels in the newly-named clan. |
