Orchid is the clan’s Shaman and as such, determines the fate of every dragon who enters the Order, whether by birth or capture. When a new hatchling is born, she determines its fate. Markings, mutations, and colors may be considered auspicious or ill-omened, depending on the word she receives from the Ones Apart. Hatchlings deemed auspicious are gifted to other clans as ambassadors, servants, warriors, or improvers of bloodlines. Particularly promising hatchlings are kept in the clan, though this is rare. Hatchlings deemed unfit, meanwhile, are raised with kindness, but with the ultimate expectation of sending their souls to the Ones Apart upon their reaching adulthood. This is not done with malice, but with the belief that, after a certain period of servitude to the Ones Apart, their souls might one day be redeemed and reborn into more favorable circumstances.

The same is done with dragons captured in battle or found abandoned. Prisoners deemed worthy may be ransomed or sold to other clans, while those found unworthy are sent to the Ones Apart. Pilfered hatchlings may face either fate, though typically they are first raised to adulthood before their Sending. This ensures that they might be raised with the tenets and beliefs of the Order so that they might better serve the Ones Apart.

Orchid does not lack compassion but doesn't let it distract from her duties. She is utterly devoted to the Ones Apart and in keeping the clan pleasing in their sight. Though her enemies may characterize her as cold and ruthless, Orchid knows better—she is merely focused on the bigger picture as communicated to her by the Ones Apart, rather than getting lost in the desires and fears of individuals.
