A secluded dragon by nature, Monarch's injured orb only serves to make him even more reserved. He spends most of his time n his cave tending to his butterflies, one of the few creatures so simple that he cannot see into their minds. He finds them fascinating, and he has collected several rare species. His cave is a haven for them, and several of his clanmates will refuse to eat them out of respect. Though he cannot speak, Monarch is more than capable of writing, and enjoys it to the point that he has become the clan's scribe, recording all events as an unbiased observer.

Monarch is a strange dragon. He was found by Fluffy and Silver when he was young after they noticed him following them around. They could barely see him through the terrible blizzard that was common around this time of year. Fluffy suggested that they take him back to their lair, there was no way the little dragon would survive the snowstorm alone. And indeed, he was alone. There was no clan nearby for several miles. As they discussed this, the hatchling stayed silent, simply looking at them. And shivering. He looked to be quite young, way too young to be out of the nest. And the orb in the middle of his forehead was scratched. When Silver and Fluffy noticed, they immediately led him back to their lair, which thankfully wasn't far. Silver found a few blankets and covered the hatchling in them, while Fluffy grabbed some of their small stock of food for him. The hatchling ate, and soon his shivering stopped and he gradually fell into a deep sleep.
While the small dragon rested, Silver and Fluffy inspected the small scratch on his orb. It didn't seem too bad, but both of them knew the damage it could cause. They also debated names for the hatchling, as they had asked him multiple times for his name, each time receiving a silent questioning stare in return. It was Silver who finally suggested Monarch, after commenting that his wings looked like the butterfly.
When Monarch woke, Fluffy asked what he thought about the name. The hatchling still didn't respond, but he seemed...happy. In some strange way, they both could tell that Monarch was happy with his name. After a few more instances of this, and his apparent inability to speak, they realized it must have been his damaged orb.
As Monarch grew older, his strange ability grew as well. By the time he was no longer a hatchling, he could speak full sentences through his mind. His true speech however, never fully developed. He can manage a few words at a time, before accidentally slipping back into telepathy. His clan mates consider it a gift, as it allows him to freely communicate with any dragon, no matter their language. He considers it a curse, separating him from his clanmates and the outside world. He often wears a mask to cover his damaged orb, so that he can pretend to be normal, at least until he has to speak.
