Hendricks is quite skilled as a craftsman; the jewelry he makes nets a good price at those markets the clan can still trade in, one of the few consistent trade goods they currently produce, and he more or less enjoys the work. But while ornamentation is certainly near to his heart, in this one activity it's not his priority. He spends much of his time using his creations for moderately dangerous magical experiments. Not...not all of them, he would hasten to assure you. Not even most of them, since such activities tend to cause breakages and some of that equipment is damnably hard to repair. The fact remains, however, that Hendricks mainly got into the jewelry business in order to mess around with wards, to see exactly how many protections could be imbued into a ring, whether you can store power inside a stone so that even the least magically-inclined of dragons can use it, that sort of thing. It's gotten him into a world of trouble in the past, as such devices are difficult to test except in the field, and when they haven't worked he's usually been forced to pack up and leave to avoid harsh consequences. He's gone through several assumed names and whether this is his real one is anyone's guess. Outrunning his mistakes has resulted in a number of setbacks, due to things being left behind, but now that he has a decent facility and more understanding landlords he's actually made quite good progress. He hasn't gotten to the point of being able to sell his more experimental creations, but they're reliable enough to be used by the clan for any number of dangerous activities. The only thing he can't seem to get right is fireproofing. No matter what he does the wards just break down sooner or later. Fortunately his workspace is near Murrel's rooms. It is Hendricks's firm belief that most of life's problems can be solved by running away, and the remaining ones can probably be convinced to go away if you use the right words. He despises confrontation of all kinds and is deeply averse to violence. Most of the guards make him very uncomfortable, though he has been known to consult with Liszt in the course of his work. During the course of their work together he struck up a fairly close friendship with Rhyncus, enough so that he kept her daughter on after she left for better employment. Some have jokingly suggested that they bonded over inconceivable vanity, though everyone knows that Hendricks far exceeds anyone else in that area. His concern for his appearance has sometimes conflicted with basic lab safety; many an item of clothing has caused a minor incident when it caught in an unstable mechanism, much to his embarrassment. |
