Layfe has had an easy life he claims, but the reality is that he was gifted in his birthright. While born in a desert to a family that followed Stormcatcher's word, he was lucky enough to be born to a family that had a wealth of riches, affording foreign goods and an enormous greenhouse of butterflies and insects to sell to other Clans. He grew up surrounded by nature in the midst of an unforgiving electric sandy wasteland. He was a natural at picking up knowledge of biology, botany, and the care of insects, but entomology. As an adult, he peddled these insects to other Clans, planning initially to stay with his birth Clan.

When a vacationing Razorclaw wandered through, the two went to a battle of wills over their knowledge. Both exhausting the other after hours of debate, he agreed to come visit her lands to trade rare species back and forth. He was so impressed with her Clan and with the beauty of the land around him - and especially the native wildlife - he applied to become a Clan member. When he'd went home to tell his family, he had found no sign of them. The lair was empty, the greenhouse smashed, and any signs of struggle were moot.

Returning back to the Clan in Light, he was treated with kindness and strong empathy from Amarenthi - one who had also recently kicked out her last mate for attempting to experiment on her. The two bonded over their sorrow, eventually falling in love. Neither has looked back since. They spend their days in their own little haven of life underground, singing to each other while watching the insects and plants flourish around them.
