xxx In the very heart of the Everloft lies the den of the Elder Matriarch Wistala. Originally from the domain of the Stormcaller and his Lightnign Flight, she now makes her home in the middle of a dense thicket of trees frozen solid by the frigid climate of the Southern Icefields. She never wanted to be a leader, but gradually a clan of exiles formed around her anyway, bred from the grace of her goodwill, caring nature and belief in second chances. Wistala is an ancient creature so much so that her presence is a testament to the enduring power and resilience of dragon-kind. Once a queen who ruled through wisdom and charity, she has stepped back from the front lines and passed leadership of the clan to the current High Queen, a sandsurge named Leona. Wistala's body, while touched by her age, is still a wonder to behold in its own right. Her scales, dulled by the passage of time still gleam a radiant blue, hinting to traces of her glory days. She claims that each scale tells a story: the foundation of the Everloft clan, the decision to make it into the second chance so many dragons needed, the tales of battles fought for her charges and many more. Though her wings may be tattered and worn and her form weathered by time, her spirit shines are fiercely as ever before. That at least, is something age cannot take from her. As Elder Matriarch of the Everloft, Wistala holds a respected and reverent place in her clanmates' lives. Her word, previously law, is still upheld by her successor, and dragons of the Everloft still seek her out amidst the tangles of her frosty lair to in pursuit of her wise words. Leona, herself, has secretly approached her predecessor many times before, wishing to temper her choices for the clan with the age-old experience of the Elder Matriarch's counsel. Wistala is not merely respected for her previous power and authority, but also for her knowledge of ancient lore and arcane secrets. Truly, a dragon that has survived so many years such as her possesses a labyrinthine mind of forgotten truths and forbidden intelligence. Some Everloft dragons claim that to speak with their Elder Matriarch is to peek into the mysteries of Sornieth and beyond, to touch upon things best left unsaid. Perhaps such claims are true. Perhaps they are merely tall tales passed down to the younger generations. Whatever the truth, Wistala guards her secrets well. Through the ages, Wistala has witnessed the rise and fall of many other clans, both friendly and otherwise. She has witnessed to birth and death of many dragons both inside and outside the Everloft. She to this day spends many nights watching the heavens, imagining new stars being born and galaxies colliding, her eyes gazing upon things perhaps only a dragon of her age can see or comprehend. Yet, amidst the infinite expanse of the universe, it is the simpler things closer to home that truly bring the Elder Matriarch pleasure. The wind beneath her wings, the sun on her scales, the sound of her clan thriving in the snowy landscape around her. Though her time will surely one day run out, Wistala remains a figure of awe for the majority of her clan. Those that know her more intimately, however, will know truly just how much of a tired old dragon the Elder Matriarch is. In the end, whenever that may be, she longs for nothing more than to pass quietly in her den with her son and mate by her side.
